I feel that I really benefited from the Writing internship class. From it, I saw how the English skills I learned in school transitioned into certain careers in which writing was a key component. You bring up a lot of excellent points. Too often, our colleges and universities are becoming four year white collar trade schools.

true, but in this whole letter, I was trying to defend an internship course which afforded a student the opportunity to work at a newspaper, publishing house, etc. Of course we need to retain the "sense of the art" --really that filament of the art that drew most of us to it in the first case. But, we also need to find out how these skills can be applied.
You could launch a full fledged journalism program, but that won't ever happen.
I don't like schools becoming more and more four year white collar trade schools, but there needs to be some outline or emphasis as to how to turn this skill into a trade, and what trades there are for that.
