i don't have the background in social activism that you do, but i couldn't agree with your epiphany more. your "provincial" efforts are not in vain at all. raising awareness locally in the bubbling ferment is part of how a more global cake is made to rise.
maybe some copy editor at the SF chronicle scans the headlines of the berkeley student paper for stories...maybe a burma rally makes the front page of the UCB paper...etc.
why do you think there is such intense media coverage of every itch and scratch between israel and palestine? do you honestly think those issues are substantially more important than widespread internecine slaughter in africa? how about human tragedy in bangladesh or turkmenistan? nope. no way. it's just that it has drawn more attention (for a variety of reasons) in the minds of those who make decisions about what is "fit to print", so to speak.
