I went so St. Louis for the weekend. While I was there I discovered I really honestly hate rich people. I see no reason for them to exist. I'm not advocating killing them, or anything, mostly because I don't really want death hanging over my head for eternity. But damn. Something needs to be done. That being said (and this, here, is the ( Read more... )

I think the liking-stuff-more-than-people can apply to various economic backgrounds. I say this because I know what you mean about being really put off by it, but I've observed this behavior in people who would not otherwise be called "rich"--but who do indeed elect to spend most of the income they do have on stuff.

Though my problem with such people is also that I feel they usually only like stuff for the sake of stuff, bit for each particular object's sake. Because I really like material things, but I also don't see the point of spending much money of them unless the thing in question is really special, unique and necessary, and unless one is brainwashed by branding, most things are not. And also, if you take the time to really appreciate each thing you own, it's hard to own too many things, because you start to lose track.

I do realise that this isn't only a rich people thing. Honestly, I do. It just pisses me off to be around conservative rich people who don't work hard for their money and who don't really do that much to share it. I have no problem with people spending most of their money on stuff, because most people work hard for their money. Also, I've never really been around people who were conservative. Honestly the most conservative people I know consider themselves liberal, except my extended family, who are country.

Oh, yeah, I didn't mean that as a "hey, don't stigmatize the rich!" thing as much as an "I hear ya, and it's pretty widespread" thing. :-)

I love stuff. It is such a problem. I do work hard for my money, so when I spend it I feel like I deserve it. There's a great sense of satisfaction for me to watch my investments grow, to buy a new car and pay it off in full, things like that. But MAN, do I wish I had millions and didn't ever have to worry about a thing. I wish I could buy a Louis Vuitton bag and not have sticker shock. Or Jimmy Choos. Instead, I spend my money at Payless and Target, buying things I love at a low price. Still, I wish I could win the lottery.

Am I shallow?

And I consider myself to be politically moderate, though I seem conservative compared to my Bloomington friends. :-)
