Thoughts on SPN 7.16

SHUT UP ABOUT SACHIN ALREADY, MEDIA. SHHHHHUUUT UUUUP. Not nearly as much coverage to even the Union Budget. What the hell, country. What the hell.

SPOILERS under the cut.

7.16: Out With The Old

1. As it is wont to do, Show starts off with something that looks like it's a filler, but ends up tying into the over-arching plot in a major way. It was interesting, if not terribly enlightening.

2. Cursed objects! The whole thing played a little flat, though. As if nobody was really interested in that particular plot thread. Hell, this whole episode played flat. Rather underwhelming.

3. Props to Show for the tea-kettle scene, though. I was squirming, wondering what horrible thing was going to happen, then decided the safest course of action was just to cover my eyes until I heard signs of a scene change. (You'd think that, after nearly six years of watching SPN, I'd be less of a wuss.)

4. I really, really like the Leviathans and Dick Roman (PLEASE BRING BACK EDGAR) but the whole Joyce/George thing felt tired. Please do something new with how you characterise your villains, Show, thank you.

4.5. I do admit to giggling when George "helped out" Sam in the climactic fight, and when he licked Joyce's blood off the sword.

5. Shouldn't people be asking more questions to random men bursting into their home/shop, FBI agents or no?

6. My absolute favourite part of the episode, of course, was Sam's insomnia. Loved every goddamn thing about it, from the falling asleep behind the wheel to the "I would tick you off, but I'm too tired" to Stairway to Heaven on loop to "enhanced interrogation technique". <3 I was hoping for just a leeeetle more crazy!Sam, but at this point I'm just going to revel in whatever scraps Show throws our way.

7. Research lab? To "cure" cancer? WTF? It's interesting that the Leviathans are integrating themselves so well into everyday culture--they can easily assume the life of anybody they want on the planet. Perhaps they mean to supplant the entire human population one day, and these research efforts are ways to "perfect" their habitat. That could be interesting, and would be a hell of a lot more of an insidious threat; one that would be very hard to fight against.

7.5. On further thought, we can assume that the Leviathans don't share human biology. Would human diseases affect them? And where are they getting the technical nous to do all these things, anyway? What makes them think they'll succeed where thousands have failed over centuries?

7.9. Weren't they doing some pretty advanced genetic engineering back in 7.09? At least, some vague stuff about "working on [their] DNA" and look, IDK. I'm probably over-thinking this.

8. Frank! TBH, I saw this coming from the moment the Winchesters met him, but I admit to being a little surprised that it was this soon.

9. No Phantom!Bobby signs this episode, Show? Okay.

10. HELLO, PREVIEW. Frankly, this was the only thing I took away from that 15 second clip:

That image gutted me, I will admit. The next episode could end up killing me, although I'm scared they'll relegate crazy!Sam to the first five minutes of the episode and then focus on pseudo-Cas the rest of the time. Not that I mind seeing pseudo-Cas, but crazy!Sam, 'kay? CRAZY!SAM. *flails*
