The Name of the Rose

I first heard of this book when I was 14/15 and read an interview with Umberto Eco--I was so impressed by the interview that I was desperate to read this book. I'm usually a big fan of medieval mysteries (Ellis Peters and Michael Jecks are my heroes), but this book has been my nemesis for years. I've started and stopped reading it about 5 times now, but can never get very far. I've seen the movie, and it's one of my favorites of all time, so I thought I would love the book too, but for many of the same reasons you listed here, I just can't get myself to actually read this thing from cover to cover.

I admit, I struggled with it for all the reasons you set out here - but mostly because of the huge chunks of latin which I had to skim over (obviously my 2 years of amo amas amat was insufficient grounding for this!), but you are right, the detective story is intriguing. However - I'd recommend seeing the film instead of trudging your way through this one - and it isn't often you'll find me saying that!
