What I've found to help is to sort of pull the skin at the bottom of my eye down so that it forms a bit of a "pocket," then kind of sliiiide the contact into that pocket. That said, I have 1) soft lenses (instead of RGPs) and 2) nails. And you're right, it took me WAY longer to learn how to get them out than in.

I actually need to get an eye exam here eventually, now that you mention it. Each of my eyes has a different prescription and I think the contacts for my left eye are not quite a match.

I finally figured out a way that works pretty well. I slide the contact towards the outside of my eye, and then I pinch it between my thumb and index finger. It still takes me a couple tries, usually, but considering it took me about an -hour- to get them out the first time in the optometrist's office, I'll take what I can get.

And yes, you should get an exam. You have to take especially good care of your eyes, after all, and if you're having to strain or what have you, you could be damaging or making the problem worse.
