It's The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins (and the first book is titled The Hunger Games). The series takes place in a dystopian future where North America is now a country called Paneam and is divided into districts. There were 13, but District 13 was obliterated by the Capitol after a rebellion. Every year since the rebellion, each district sends one boy and one girl to the Capitol as tributes for the Hunger Games. During the Hunger Games, tributes are forced (and sometimes not really forced) to battle to the death, until one tribute remains. The series takes place from the perspective of Katniss, a girl who volunteers to be a tribute from her district.
The entire series is fantastic (although I'm still processing the final book). I couldn't stop reading. Katniss is a strong character (not without her faults), and, yes, there is a bit of a love triangle, but it's not really the main focus of the story.
