I think college generally gives people a better chance of being educated, wise people, but that it doesn't necessarily make people wiser or more educated. I've been surprised how many students at berkeley don't care about the learning so much as the degree - and on that point your dad is right: sadly, a college degree gives people much more clout regardless of whether or not they deserve it. You are an independent-thinker, emily, which automatically makes you wiser than about 50% of the UCB student body, and you read more than anyone I know. You're dad is probably just worried that others won't be able to see that in you, when they don't see a college degree; but, you need to do what you think is right for you. And on that note - definitely go to NY. Living there, on my own, finally taught me the responsibilities of adulthood and the true value of independence in a way that college can't.

Sorry this was so long *feel better*

there are so many lame, stupid people out there with college degress it isn't funny, and aside from that just because someone doesn't have a college degree doesn't mean that they don't deserve to be listened to with respect. I value education, but it doesn't make you a wise, all-knowing person. It just doesn't. Tell your dad Bush has a college education, and we know what your dad thinks of him.
