Sad Times for Animals

The animal shelter where I volunteer euthanized two cats this week whom they diagnosed "shelter depressed." These were physically healthy cats who were deemed "unadoptable" because they had been at the shelter for some time without any adoption interest, were shy with people, and presented some difficulty to the staff when it came to administering ( Read more... )

The Humane Society here in St. Louis ran two sales this summer on pre-owned cats and dogs. They cut their adoption fees really low: $19.95 for cats and #39.95 for dogs. (The shelter is relatively new, and their fees are usually much higher.) The lower prices did not apply to kittens or puppies as they usually get adopted much easier. I donate to the Humane Society and to the Animal Protective Assn. here. We have a senior dog who probably would not tolerate any new furry friends.

Our animal shelter had a "sale" also where the prospective owners could set their own price. They only got rid of a small number of animals. Things are tough. So glad to hear that you are a donor.

Thank you for sharing this, Beth. I couldn't agree with you more. We've always gotten our pets from the Humane Society, and I wouldn't consider doing it any other way. I applaud you deciding to stay there and fight from within. Like you said, you can do a lot more than you could if you were sitting at home crying. Good for you! Our Humane Society here daily receives animals from families who can no longer afford to keep them. It breaks my heart. I hope your efforts are met with some success.

(((hugs)))

Thanks, Gloria. It was a tough decision, and I hope I am able to deal with it if more cats are put down. In the meantime, I'm glad to know that you support your local Humane Society. As long as I can afford it, I will never go empty-handed to mine again.
