My brother Philip graduated as a marine engineer from the CA Maritime Academy in the fall of 1945 - right after the end of WW II. He had started in Jan. of 1944 - right out of high school; being wartime the program was accelerated. He didn't get a BS from that, I'm quite certain, but was commissiond an ensign in the US Navy Reserve. As I recall, his sea duty started on a Victory ship (loaded with beer) which went to Japan and Korea. Later, a tanker to Venuzela and a passenger liner to England. My guess is that he did that for something between one and two years. I don't remember any strongly negative comments on the whole experience. I happen to have his copy of the "Hawespipe", their yearbook of Fall '45.

Hey, maybe you could become a professional diver? It seems like a potentially pretty awesome job.
