Continuing my Intercon recap, now with actual games!
Friday night I played in Last Fair Deal Gone Down. I was Constance Murphy and enjoyed playing a ball of angst. This game made interesting diagetic use of metacongnitive techniques. I enjoy the way that these sorts of techniques are making their way more and more into games that aren't particularly experimental or focused on those techniques. I really like that these ideas are becoming more and more mainstream in the LARP community.
Friday night I hung out and socialized and spent some lovely time hanging out in the ball pit at the Cruise Party.
Saturday morning I played After Party. I played KC, a pre-op, pre-T transmale. I was very excited about this character. After 15 years of LARPing, it's not too often that I get a character and think "wow, I haven't done that before." It was a fascinating role-playing challenge that also allowed me an opportunity to pull out a couple of my songs. I didn't wind up feeling that the Ars Amandi mechanic added that much to the game, but it was a really interesting role and I enjoyed getting to play off some great LARPers.
Saturday afternoon I played Tales of Irnh. For me personally, this game suffered from some expectation mismatch issues. It was blurbed as a 20 player tales game, in the universe of Across the Sea of Stars. Across the Sea of Stars was my first experience with scene or tale-based games, and had a huge impact on how I write and think about games. Tales of Irnh was a good tales game, but it was really a five-player game run four times simultaneously. One of the things I love about tales games is the variety of experiences they provide, including in the variety of players one interacts with. This felt limiting and a little disappointing to me. However, the tales were interesting, and I did enjoy the game as it was.
Saturday evening, I was a GM for Resonance. This was one of the smoothest and most interesting runs of this game yet. A game that normally takes about 5 hours plus game wrap finished in 4 hours. Then our players sat around for over an hour talking about the themes of the game, what happened in the universe and the techniques we used to make it work. The conversation touched on most of the things I think are interesting in the game. Overally, this was an amazing GM experience.
Saturday night, I danced all night with a variety of wonderful people, including some I've been dancing with for years and some I had never danced with before. I love the Intercon dance, and we were so glad to have our DJ back this year. After that, I flitted around parties for a while and got to hang out with even more cool people!
Sunday morning, we ran our newest game, Her Eternal Majesty's Privy Council for the Continual Funding of the Mad Arts and Sciences. Our players were appropriately off the wall, and it was wonderful fun to see it all come to life.
After that was the long goodbye, and then we left before con wrap to get to the airport so I could teach in Chicago Monday morning.
Thank you all for an absolutely amazing time. I already miss you.
