I was considering submitting my journal for review at the_reviewers, but upon looking through my Memories, I decided it was a horrible plan ( Read more... )

You wanna delete your posts on LJ and things you said to have other people say good stuff about your journal?

I don't know about the-reviewers, how they review your LJ or what they say about it. I don't know how constructive and helpful it can be, but one little thought that occured to me: if you're deleting stuff to have your LJ look good, then you already know what stuff are bad and don't need other people's opinion, giving that the opinion given will be based on what the whole of your LJ is not what it really is ( ... )

I see what you mean. You make some good points. It's less changing the journal for them, though - the situation is that when I thought "hey, maybe I'd like to submit this and see what gets said", I realized that I don't even think half of what is in my journal is likeable or a very good representation of me as a person, and if I don't even like it, then putting it up for review would be a little on the pointless side.
I have to say that this shows a difference between you and I in terms of art, as well: I understand where you're coming from, after all, if we only did what was in the books, we'd never innovate, and things would never change or improve. I have a tendency to do things... not so much by the book, per se, but in a way as to not offend the people I admire. Perhaps that is something I should try to change, to worry less about.

You're WAAAY too smart for "rating communities". I'm not holding the *desire* to have your journal rated against you per se, since artsy young girls tend to have a desire to be accepted by similarly conspicuously clever and artistic (pretentious) people, but think about what you're considering, here! You're going to ask a gaggle of self-obsessed basement-dwelling pseudo-hipsters if you're awesome enough. The first rule of internets coolness is that you can't ask for it, and I think you actually know this. Your temptation is pardonable, since you are possessed of a vast intellect and uncommon wit. You don't need a rubber stamp for your journal, and you certainly shouldn't change what you wrote to get one ( ... )

No no, it's totally cool. I think I go to Livejournal rating communities less because I depend on them for something and more because I'm just really curious as to what people think when reading my journal. People on your friends list are less likely to tell you that you sound like a jackass than people in rating communities, though admittedly, they are a bit too biased in the other direction. All I'm really looking for is honesty. I expect my journal to be well-written, and to do that, sometimes it helps to have someone who doesn't give a shit about me as a person look at it. I don't take the contents of my Livejournal exceptionally seriously, but I do take the presentation seriously enough as to be considered some kind of warped vanity.

I wish more people would leave comments like that, though, because the kind of honesty you've dispensed is what I'm looking for.
