Scenes from retail purgatory…

When I took the seasonal retail job, I expected lots of good fiction-fodder. There have, however, been only a few standout moments. Still, if I take the top half dozen incidents from the past two months and combine them into a single day in a comic story about a retail worker, I might get some mileage out of them. I’m recording them here in some ( Read more... )

These stories are really fun to read!
But I'm sure horror to live through!

It was kind of fun to write about them. It made me feel better about having experienced them. :-)

My empathy for my fellow flake in Adult Story #2 ended when she brought up her ADD. Nobody cares about your acronyms, lady. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200.

Honestly, why do people feel the need to share their diagnoses with complete strangers? If you need to share, go talk to your family and friends; I'm a shop clerk, not your shrink. There really appears to be nothing any more that is personal, nothing that we don't need to share, share, share. I hate it. (It seems to me the driving ethos behind Facebook and Twitter, which is part of why I can't stand either of those...but that's for another entry...)

There's plenty I don't share on Facebook! And I don't Twit. I see FB primarily as a place to hang out with my friends. Sometimes it's silly and sometimes it's serious, but rarely does it get too deep or too personal. That's what works for me.

Sorry--that was not a comment on you or any of my friends who are on Facebook. I understand that not everyone on FB is constantly baring his or her soul or discussing his or her bowel movements. Plenty of people use it in reasonable ways and get a lot of pleasure from it. Including, I'm sure, you. But it's the whole ethos of the place that bugs me--the fact that everything is public until you make it private (and a lot of people seem to want everything to remain public), the fact that you can't use any of the apps unless you let them scour your info (including your friends-list) first, the way so many people HAVE to check in 40 times a day and update their status, the friend requests I get from people I've never even heard of, the way that every damn website I go to these days seems to offer me the opportunity to "like" it on my FB wall--the basic assumption behind FB seems to be that we all want every aspect of our lives to be out there for everyone to observe, admire, comment on... To which I say, no thanks. I get the same ( ... )

This is one of the reasons I limit the boys public appearances. They don't act that way (and I wouldn't allow it) but until I feel they know the proper way to behave we aren't going to be exposing everyone to our lessons.

This is also why I'm glad at a bit over two the boys say please and thank you. (Not to mention knowing you cover your mouth when you cough and sneeze which is something their 8 year old cousins don't seem to know yet.)
