just watched two short documentaries about north korea, first a national geographic special featuring lisa ling, the other called 'Kimjongilia', which actually is named after a flower created for kim jong il to represent "peace, love, wisdom, and justice". i can't believe that's not a joke. i am sickened, i am horrified. and having spent so many ( Read more... )

i'm not sure what you can do, particularly about north korea! the US in particular would be very very happy to see north korea democratised, but it's basically impossible for anyone to intervene, even if they wanted to. although we've witnessed humanitarian intervention in africa and eastern europe, and the "democratising" war on the middle east, those threats worth contravening international law just weren't as high as the threat of aggravating and invading a nation armed with nuclear weapons who have been known to use them - like north korea. the other lesser options of international persuasion are things like embargoes, sanctions, etc, which generally don't affect nk due to its economic and trade patterns. i've never read a plan proposing to deal with nk that had any utility, i don't think anyone knows what to do besides try to stay on civil terms with them.
