End-of-the-Year Writing Meme

Jan 01, 2014 18:35

A day late but who cares?

Meme Questions from gamma_x_orionis because she is always doing awesome memes and I have nothing better to do than to steal them from her:

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
WAY MORE. I wasn't even going to write for the HP fandom at all but then I just discovered HPFC in late January or so and everything escalated really fast.

Where did you publish/archive your stories?
I publish everything at fanfiction dot net. I created my LJ in February only to post writing updates, and then in June I discovered HiH and started writing for Sugarquill. Other than the WB and other challenged there, all of the things I write for Sugarquill are published on my ff.net account first. I rarely post my writing on this LJ, unless it's a drabble for 12_stories, which is possibly the only thing I don't publish on ff.net.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
All I thought I'd do this year from 2012 was keep chugging on my FT multi-chapter (which was in the planning stages at the time) and publish more Pokemon one-shots sparingly. Instead, I went ahead and wrote 71 more Harry Potter fics, after discovering HPFC.

Did you take any writing risks this year?
I'd say I took a lot of risks. I think I've evolved a lot as a writer this year, since I started writing for another fandom and meeting lots of other people who helped encourage me as an author. In the beginning I was only writing tolerable Ron/Hermione and purely canon, but now in December, I'm all about next-gen femmeslash cousincest roxannedominque which I probably would have been appalled at in 2012 and maybe even the beginning of this year. So I have taken a lot of risks. I've read lots of fics from ltos of great authors, and if you compare something I wrote even a few months ago to now I'm sure that there will be lots of imporvement. My writng style has been changing constantly this whole year, and I've been taking more and more risks as a writer to try and grow.

Do you have any writing goals for the new year?
This might not be very creative but I'm going to say to update on a regular basis. Seriously, I'm kind of ridduiculous. It's been eight months since I've last updated Top Ten, I have not even started the third chapter of Finding Lorcan, and Unforgettable and Beach Madness...don't even get me started on those. For 2014 I want to updated Top Ten on a schedule and finish it in a reasonable time span. Finding Lorcan is not too much of a priority but I want it done by the end of the year. I'd like the Beach Madness rewrite at least started, as well as something on Unforgettable even if it's just deleting it. I need to do something about it. And, if I can do that, then I will think about starting my big multi-chapter project becuase I don't want to start it without proving to myself that I can update and write in reasonable times.

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
I think I might have said this before, but my favorite is Heart Attack. It doesn't have as much attention as I think it deserves but I think that I really explored the character's depth well and used good descriptive language. I feel like the romance is as real as I've ever wrote in that story. Sometimes I can't even believe I wrote that.

Okay, NOW your most popular story?
Top Ten! It has 225 reviews now even though I haven't updated since last April. xD It's more popular than it should be, but who am I to complain?

Story of yours most underappreciated by the universe, in your opinion?
It was kind of hard to choose one for this, but I eventually decided on Love Happens. This story is a modern high-school!au in which Ron and Harry are besties, Hermione is the bitchy new student with the crazy hair that Ron instantly hates, and Draco is the smexy blonde ass-hat. Kind of.

I personally like school!aus when they're well-done because they can be absolutely hilarious, in any fandom, if done right. Obviously, now, when I look at it, I see lost opportunities for good humor and places where I cringe from its bad-ness but otherwise I think it came out all-right...especially since it's the longest one-shot I ever wrote at 4K.

The people that did read and review had some probles with it because I hadn't made it "British" for them, which I do understand. I mean, it's not their fault that they don't know how U.S. high-schools normally function and it's my fault that I didn't follow British norms like "mum" instead of "mom" because the moajority of my readers were British.

But still. I liked how it came out, and I think that it should have been appreciated more. :c

(In second place was Best Friends. Come on, it was a perfectly good femmeslash fic, Lily/Andromeda, and it gets zero attention. Why?)

(I must be honest though, lately my one-shots have been getting close to no reviews. Where did everyone go? I know people are lazy with reviewing, but, really!)

Story that could have been better?
Forever And Always. I just...I just don't think like I fully developed it. Like there was more I could have done, yet I left it at this half-baked level for everyone. People have told me it's fine but I just don't think so, and I'm not even entirely sure why. (There's also Bravery, but that just legitmately sucks. There is no saving that fic.)

Most fun story to write?
I had a blast writing Scorrose this year! Once I got into next-gen and everything, they were easily my favorite ship, especially since they had underlying tones in the epilogue and I am a canonhead of extremity. So far on ff.net I only have two Scorrose fics: this, which is actually a ScorLilyRose triangle, and this, which was for a Sugarquill WB challenge and I thought was really cute. I also have this which for some reason I have not published on ff.net yet, which was easily one of the most fun and awesome things I have ever written.

Story with single sweetest moment?
There were a few choices I had for this but I decided on Make A Wish because all it basically is is a compliation of sweet moments between Ron and Hermione. I believe the sweetest one, however, would have to be the birthday in which Ron almost dies and Hermione decides to stop all the birthday extravagance, next year's birthday being completely plain.

The story that made you cry?
Okay, I'll be honest, I kind of teared up while writing Stay With Me. That was just depressing, dammit! Poor Neville! *sniff sniff*

Most "holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story?
Um, well, I don't write smut, so...the closest thing I mgiht have to that is Rapunzels, which hints at rape and then sex in a bathtub between two girls (all completely non-explicit), but I don't have anything on the gamma_x_orionis side of things. :P

Sexiest story?
Again, I don't write smut, as I explained in the previous question. Closest thing to that would have to be this...and that's just steamy making out.

Hardest story to write
Since the writers have been revealed it's okay for me to say this: the story I wrote for the Sugarquill Gift Exchange. Oh my GOSH that was SO hard to write. I got the request and I was like, well it's just family fluff and stuff how hard can that be I could write that in like ten minutes. HOW WRONG WAS I. I sat down and I'm just like...family. Right. It came out all right I suppose but the final story was probably like the fifth version. DX

Easiest story to write?
I don't know, the drabbles? All of my stories presented one challenge or another. Writing is never easy. *scoffs*

Most unintentionally telling story
Telling as in non-descriptive, or telling as in giving away what I'm really like? For the former, that would have to be one of my earlier fics. For the latter, that would probably be Love Happens because I kind of jsut let myself go and if you squint the whole story kind of just becomes a 4K rant about the stupidity of high-school.

Story you haven't yet written, but intend to
Oh, I have plans all right. *smirks* No need to worry. Excluding GGE, Quidditch, and the few HPFC comps I'll be joining (because I am SO DONE with challenge binging) it's going to be just me and the plot bunnies. I have plans, especially for Pokemon, though right next to it is Bleach, which I was never sure I'd be able to write but was suddenly hit with an inspiration injection these past few months. 2014 will be a big year with delving into other fandoms, perhaps even Sherlock if I'm feeling confident. AAAH SHERLOCK JUST WAITING FOR JANUARY 19 SO I CAN SEE IT ON TV AAAAAH

So today is the first year of 2014 and I'm hoping that I'll maybe stop procrastinating for once and make it as great of a year as it should be! So by 2013, and hello 2014! :D
