Character Information
Name: ‘Childlike Empress’/ Moonchild Shaw
Canon Origin/Series: Neverending Story. Unfortunately there IS no other places that has a good enough source of information on this other than wiki. :
School Year: 1
Gender: Female
Age: 11
Out of school living location: Brimingham, England
Blood status: Believes self to be muggleborn, but is actually a half-blood.

Personality: Moonchild is a kind, soft-spoken young girl who rarely leaves her home. She's demure and calm, almost never raising her voice above a level, reasonable tone, and is obedient and dutiful. She cares for her foster family very much, but from the time she was old enough to walk she’d been distancing herself from them. “There is something different about them,” she’d say to herself, watching them with a careful, critical eye. It was nothing tangible, just a feeling she got that made her polite and cordial with them, but never exactly loving. They are ‘mother’ and ‘father,’ and she does what they expect of her, giving them hugs and kissing their cheeks, but never further in her affections.

This isn’t to say she’s a cold person, because in fact she is very open and warm to people, but it might have something to do with knowing they aren’t her real parents that makes her act this way, or it’s a form of passive-aggressive revenge in the fact that they’ve kept her isolated from much of the outside world. Or, again, it might be that feeling that she’s just different in a way she can’t begin to explain, until she receives the news that she is a witch, validating everything she’d been thinking.

Moonchild is curious and bright, quick to smile and join in a laugh; when she does get around to making friends, she is for them through anything and will stand up for them regardless of what they do. Having had very little contact with the outside world, she's fairly naive and trusting of people, meaning she gets easily fooled by bad people, or led into believing things that aren’t possibly true because she doesn’t kow any better. She also doesn’t know about the world much further past her front steps and what she’s read in books or seen on the tele.

An important note of her personality is that Empress views good and evil, beauty and ugliness, to be equal and doesn’t like one more than another. She is, to put it lightly, extremely neutral on such topics, because she was never taught to do so, it’s not in her nature, and she simply really doesn’t care one way or the other.

Canon Background: Childlike Empress has been around since the beginning of human imagination. Every once in a while, the length of time varying, she falls ill and the Nothing begins to take over her world of Fantasia.

It’s at this point the book that houses her and her world lands in the hands of some child, male or female, and draws them into reading it. The story changes from person to person, though we’ll focus on Bastian since he’s the one the book and movie are about.

Bastian reads the story of Atreyu, a young boy who goes on a grand adventure across Fantasia to find the cure to the Empress’ illness, because only when she recovers will she be able to keep Fantasia safe again. Once he reaches the end of Atreyu’s journey, as Atreyu heads back to the Ivory Tower to tell the Empress he failed, he’s introduced to the Childlike Empress herself.

The Empress reveals her fourth-wall breaking knowledge that Atreyu didn’t fail, because the boy they need is in fact right there with them. She then begins speaking directly to Bastian, who reads this all with growing shock and confusion.

In the end he gives her a new name--Moonchild--and is given use of Empress’ powers via the AURYN, allowing him to make as many wishes he want, to make Fantasia come back as beautiful as ever.

Background (AU!Canon; HP): Killer Moonchild was born to a wizard father and a muggle mother. The two were not married, but were instead planning their wedding when her father decided to tell his soon-to-be-wife about his magical abilities in the hopes of having a more, well, magical wedding.

It did not work as planned. Moonchild’s mother took it very badly and called off the wedding, not wishing to be married to a freak and left her ex-fiancee heartbroken.

In the following couple months it became glaringly obvious that Moonchild’s mother was pregnant. Fearful that her child would be a “freak” like its’ father, she gave the child up almost immediately after it was born, and fled. The only thing she left behind was the name to be given to it: Moonchild.

There was something wrong with her right from birth. She was weak and sickly, at times unnaturally still and quiet, and other times screaming and crying with a ferocity that shocked those to see it come from such a tiny girl.

She was eventually adopted by the Shaw family, who made enough money in their work to support the sickly girl and provide her with homeschooling to get the education she needed.

She was able to catch glimpses of the outside world from her windows, and on particularly good days when she could actually move from her bed, from what she could see when she could make it outside on brief trips.

When she turned 11 she received her Hogwarts letter and the journal with which she could communicate with the outside world; and with it came the hope that the fresh air and atmosphere of Hogwarts, along with some magic in the form of potions, could help her improve her health.

How would your character fit in to each House?
Gryffindor: Empress is remarkably brave, showing no fear in the wake of her falling tower as the Nothing destroys the world around her, and it isn’t until the tower crumples around her that she gives into tears.

Hufflepuff: She’s very loyal to her friends, and in canon, to her world to the point where she’ll do anything to protect them. She’s also bluntly honest to a fault. Canonly she’s also hard at work, in a way, in that her world is connected to her life force and her magic is what controls and does everything. She’s constantly at work keeping Fantasia alive.

Ravenclaw: She loves, loves, LOVES to read and absorb knowledge. She eats up the books she’s given, longing to learn as much as she can about the world she couldn’t see before her Hogwarts letter; canonly she’s the goddess of imagination to touch on the creative side, and knows everything that happens in her world, liking to keep up with it all. She frequently breaks the fourth wall and knows her own world is a book, and has lived for millions of years, giving her years and years worth of knowledge and wisdom.

Slytherin: Empress is surprisingly Slytherin-like. She will literally stop at nothing to get the child who reads her book to give her a name, and is ery manipulative of them. She knows from the very beginning what she needs to cure her illness is a name, but instead of saying this she forces Atreyu on a heartbreaking quest just so Bastian can read it and feel sympathy for her world in order to give her a new name. Failing this, she takes Bastian to see the Old Man of Wandering Mountain, who writes everything that happens in Fantasia and everything he writes becomes true, and makes him read what he’s writing. This starts everything all over again in an endless loop, until Bastian grows desperate to escape and gives Empress a name to make it stop. There’s also the City of Lost/Old Emperors which contains all the children who tried to overthrow Empress and have been turned into mindless vegetables by her.

Sample Journal Entry: [The words on the page as a neat printed font, written in plain black]

Hello, everyone. I’ve been told this journal is magic and will allow me to talk to other people.

I’ve never had a friend before, except my tutors if they count.

My name is Moonchild, and I live in Birmingham, England. I will be starting my first year at Hogwarts come September and I’m very excited.

I have so many questions, I don’t even know where to begin. I suppose I’ll begin by asking for introductions from other students I might be meeting as I go in, and asking this:

How can I get the things I need for school? My parents don’t know anything about magic or any of the items on this list. Is it possible to simply order them? I’m afraid I don’t leave my room much.

Sample Interaction Post in Third Person: The hustle and bustle of the train station made her knees shake; the smells, the sounds-- it was too much, setting her teeth on edge.

Her parents weren’t doing much better, looking nervous and sticking close to her, and each other. It was reassuring, their supporting and protective presence around her. Supportive, and suffocating.

As they approached the train, directed through to platform 9 ¾ by a kindly wizard, her father stepped forward to grab at her things. “Here--” He began, lifting everything and helping to put it away as her mother began to fuss.

“If you have any trouble, you just let us know, alright? You can come home any time. Your health has been improving, but if you suffer a relapse--”

“You’ll be the first to know, mother. I’m sure their magic can help more than the medicines here could.” Moonchild smiles, slow and warm, and embraces first her mother, and than her father when he rejoins them.

She then boards the train and doesn’t look back.

Later she takes a seat in a compartment and watches the students walk back and forth, meeting old friends, making new ones, and sits up on her knees to look out the window. It’s beautiful, watching the world she only saw through a screen or one paper flying by her. This was freedom.
No, Moonchild hadn’t the slightest clue as to what she was getting into here, but the thrill of something promising (and adventure? A life?) pushed her anxiety aside, replacing it with a euphoric happiness she couldn’t hide.

The door slid open and Moonchild whirled about, her smile bright and clearly startling the boy on the other side. “Hello! My name is Moonchild. Would you like to be friends?”
