Do they have wizard GEDs? Because I'm pretty sure he never finished Hogwarts either, since he left to avoid the "OMG everyone is trying to kill me" thing to go hide in the woods and break horcruxes.

I've wondered about that too. I mean, clearly the boy never graduated. And neither did Hermione! How is she supposed to go found Wizarding Yale with no degree?

Think Bill Gates!
Hermione could just class it as a "Gap Year" - or she could swot for a few weeks while they repaired Hogwarts sufficiently to house exams for those who had stayed. Kids that bright *can* learn enough to pass school exams in a few weeks.
[I haven't seem the film but TTB read the book so second-hand knowledge suggests that all the bad wizards escaped from Azkaban but not all were followers of Voldemort so chasing up the rest as an Auror could have Harry busy until he got used to boredom]
PS good to have you back

I read something where JKR clarified that Harry and Ron just went right to the Aurors, while Hermione went back to Hogwarts to finish her education.

I'm going with the theory that he ends up talking with Luna (the most mentally stable character in the entire series, I have to say -- she really knows how to roll with the punches) who is working to become a magical cryptozoologist and run off to explore the world and prove the existence of creatures that no one else bothers to look for. He figures something with animals might work, because animals don't give a shit how famous you are. This, combined with his interest in Quidditch (and fame allowing him to dodge red tape that limits who can own one) leads him to open a sanctuary for the endangered Golden Snidget. Being able to get the hell away from people and find somewhere quiet to have the long-delayed utter breakdown will help him (combined with a need to keep the feeders filled and such preventing him from going completely round the bend).
