Gather 'round, kiddies, and watch as I attempt to do my first tutorial. Today we'll be creating an icon of the lovely Catherine Willows from CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Nothing special - just something I threw together last night to avoid typing out my Law notes.
Going from
this to this:
TUTORIAL #1: CATHERINE WILLOWS
1. Select an image you'd like to work with. Once you've done that, crop it to 100x100px.
2. Next, duplicate the base and set to screen 100%.
3. Duplicate the base again, drag to the top. Set the layer to Saturation 100%.
4. Create a new fill layer and fill with 85BECE at Colour Burn 100%.
5. Create another fill layer and fill with 001640 at Exclusion 50%.
6. Create yet another fill layer and fill with 571B4A at Lighten 40%.
7. Create another fill layer - last one, I promise! - with F89771 at Soft Light 100%.
(Depending on the colour of your original image, you may need to play around with the percentage of this layer. For this tutorial, I've set this layer at 50% because Catherine looked like a peach with it at 100%.)
8. Duplicate your base and drag it to the top. Set it to Soft Light 100%.
9. Flatten your image and tinker with the contrast and/or levels. (For this tutorial, I did: Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast > Contrast: 10.)
10. Add this
image (if you know who created this, please let me know so I can credit them), set to screen.
Once you've positioned it where you like it, use the eraser tool to get rid of anything obscuring the focal point of your icon. If you want, duplicate the layer and play around with the saturation and contrast like I did.
11. Add this
(courtesy
lillianporter), set to screen and position it where you like it.
12. Flatten your image again and presto! You're done!
PLEASE NOTE: This tutorial is not guaranteed to work with any picture. You may be required to experiment with the variables to get the right look.
