and i'm feeling broken-hearted. sometimes people do a really fantastic (too fantastic, apparently) job of tricking me into thinking they aren't who i think they are. or maybe it isn't a trick at all. or maybe i just never learn my lesson and put my hopes where they don't belong

We sometime unintentionally set expectations or ideals on people that they'll never live up to because they aren't made that way. To be human is to be broken hearted. We can never really know anyone as we are always changing. It's a difficult truth.

but what if they are made that way and they just don't know it? often times i think people are guilty of shooting themselves in the proverbial foot and/or are self-depricating enough that they put themselves on a path that isn't really theirs.

Well, perhaps what you say might be true also. But I also know that being an idealist isn't always bad. And not everyone ends up on the wrong path... but yes, sometimes people are just the way they are and don't change.
