Day 17: An art piece Ok so this might be the hardest one yet for me! I lived in Florence, Italy for a while in college [it was awesome!] and studied Florentine Renaissance art and gave tours at a local art museum. It was freaking amazing. I don't know if I'm going to be able to pick one thing. I mean there is so much beauty out there!
Donatello, David, after 1428, bronze, Bargello, Florence, Italy.
I saw this daily when I was working in Italy. It's my favorite representation of David ever. Sorry Academia! You can keep the other David! This one wins since it's in bronze, was not went to go on the bell tower, and I feel is far more moving when seen in person.
Andrea della Robbia, Madonna with Child and Angels, painted terracotta! Florence, Italy
Ok so this is here because it reminds me of Italy like no other type of artwork. Really. You can BUY della Robbia's all around Italy. They're still using the SAME molds and the SAME techniques to make these. Really I love all della Robbia pieces. I chose this piece because it has not only the beautiful people in the iconic blue and white, but also the AMAZING work done in the flowers/plants/fruits. This it really beautiful. It's nuts walking around Italy cause you can look up on a building and see something like this. Della Robbias are truly art for the people until a lot of other types of art. They were [are!] super affordable and widely known. I will love them for LIFE!
Caravaggio, Sick Bacchus, Oil on Canvas, 1593 CE, 67 x 53 cm, Galleria Borghese, Rome
First of all - DON'T HATE. Caravaggio is a pimp. He was employed by the Catholic Church, got into bar fights often, had lots of sex with many hot women, and killed a guy [or 2...] and the Catholic Church was like ... uhh don't do that again.. Plz paint MOAR for us. Really. I love Caravaggio's work simply because it's so compelling. Above is a self portrait of himself done was the greek good of wine and being smashed Bacchus. I think it was a wise choice for him ;) His paintings are intense super intense - like I'm going to punch you in the face tense. I love them for their use of light and contrasts and because they're normally very very very dark. In a time when a lot of things were painted really bright and gold and blue Caravaggio is a big break from the norm.
Sandro Botticelli, Return of Judith to Bethulia, 1469/70 CE, 31 X 24 cm, Florence, Galleria degli Uffizi
MUTHA FUCKIN' BOTTICELLI. I will forever love him. I chose a piece that most people have not seen of his because really people need to get exposed to more than like Birth of Venus and the Primavera. What I adore about Botticelli is the movement and grace in everything he paints. I mean come on that woman is carrying a platter with a HEAD on it and it looks so graceful. I would love to get some reproductions of his work and hang it in my house. Love it! Really I can't add much more to this. Everyone loves Botticelli right?
"The Soul of the Rose" John William Waterhouse, 1908. "And the soul of the rose went into my blood"(from Tennyson's 'Maud').
Ok so this one is totally UNFAIR. I'm naming the entire Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood for my final say in art. Now I'm using Pre-Raphaelite really REALLY loosely so don't get your panties in a twist if you think that only the original brotherhood should be included. Dude, suck it up there are a ton of amazing artists in this movement. I love them for their coloring, the mood and the softness of the paintings. I will always love them for making me think of faerytales and inspiring my imagination every time I look at a piece. I think that's what counts!
