The first is anything by Tolkien.

*gasps in shock and horror* LOL I adore Tokien's Hobbit and LotR trilogy, but it is definitely heady and the writing is...robust lol and if that isn't your thing there is nothing wrong with that.

As much as I adore it - I'd probably choose the fanfic on most days. *grin*

Can't speak for the other as I've never even heard of it, but most of the time anything everyone adores (*coughs*GameofThrones*coughs*FiftyShadesofAbuse*coughs*) I absolutely despise with every fibre of my being. XD

More often than not this is me too. The list of things that people have obsessed over that I don't like is far longer than that of the ones I have. (The only haves that come to mind right now are the Harry Potter series and The Hunger Games trilogy. Dislikes that come to mind: Game of Thrones series, Fifty Shades and Twilight.)

*laughs* I'm afraid all those end up on my dislike pile. =P Sometimes it's a matter of not liking the subject matter, or the novels having too many squicks/triggers - but part of it too, I think, is stubbornness on my part. Having people gush at me about a novel and telling me I HAVE to read cause I will absolutely LOVE it because EVERYONE loves it, tends to bring out the rebellious side of me and I dislike it on principle. LOL

As I said in reply to Nansi, diff'rent strokes, diff'rent folks. It would be boring if everyone liked the same thing. There are a few TV shows from the UK that have fandom wetting its collective underwear that I cannot stand - starting with Doctor Who. (And believe me, I've tried watching it more than once.)

Anything that people 'recommend' that is prefaced with "You must..." almost instantly goes in my list of things I won't read/watch/do any time soon, though sometimes I might look at something much later on when people have stopped gushing about it.

I liked The Hobbit but I found the LOTR books a hard slog.

I've never even heard of the Lymond Chronicles.

It does always feel odd when many people adore something that doesn't interest me or that I actually dislike. It's not fun to feel out of the loop.

I have never made it through Lord of the Rings either, and I'm not sure how I finished reading The Hobbit for that matter as I hate Tolkein's writing style. I like the story and the characters buried under everything, so I've enjoyed the movies and occasionally the fic, but definitely not the books!

I haven't even heard of The Lymond Chronicles... ah, Google tells me they are historical fiction, which may be why - I've always had a fairly narrow focus in what I was interested in reading. As long as one assumes fic from a couple few dozen many different fandoms counts as a narrow focus. :P

Tolkien is a challenge, and I personally don't judge anyone who can't get into his writing. All the years of Spenser, Chaucer, and my own readings of Norse sagas have made Tolkien a walk in the park. Which explains why I've read the entire History of Middle Earth twice.

Ha! I found Tolkein very overwritten, but persevered to find out what happened. I read all 3 books in about 6 days after seeing the first film - I wanted to know what happened to them all. I think if I hadn't seen the first film I wouldn't have stuck with the books. Too damn wordy!
