Oh god, when did putting "Merlin/Arthur" start to mean that I can't make the assumption that somewhere in the story there is Merthur SLASH? I realize that there's that warning thing on AO3 about "M/M" or "gen" but damn it, character/character to me stil means they are more than just great good buddies. I just wasted three hours of my life that I ( Read more... )

THAT IS MY BIGGEST PET PEEVE WITH AO3!!

Don't get me started--once a month I post complaining about their lack of understanding the /. Grrrr!! And my sympathies.

Does the "John/Teyla" or "Arthur/Gwen" thing annoy the daylights out of you too? It does ME; if it's a het pairing then "Bobo & June" is clear. Slash should mean SLASH.

Another peeve: clearly marked male/male slash stories where there are warning tags for "gay sex" and "anal sex" Seriously??? WTF??

My favourite thing in the whole world are people who tag a story Merlin/Arthur, and then add "FRIENDSHIP, NO SLASH".

Just use a the fucking & sign, you goddamn idiots.

Grrr One of the things I hate about AO3 is the number of people that do that! >.> It's not that hard to add an & instead of a / ! Though as bloody frustrating as that is, I think I'd take a gen story over the authors that don't warn for triggery shit.

I'm at the point now where I scour the header, the tags, the notes, and sometimes I'll even skim the story itself toward the end, and if there is even the slightest hint that the story might not be exactly what I think it is, I keep walking.

I got burned on this one because usually, if it's someone I haven't read before (this was a new-to-me writer in the After Camlann Big Bang postings), will check headers more closely (I didn't do that this time), and also, since I'm not a spoiler phobe, will skip to the end of the fic to check that out too. If the ending sucks, I will skip a story, even if it is slash. But no, this time I thought "Oh, why not just read from the beginning like a lot of people do..." Never. Again. (Also, Gwen did nothing in this fic but cut and sew tunics and giggle a lot. You could've jettisoned her character completely and had the same story).

I've been reading a lot of old favorites lately (many of the links supplied by you, thank you :)!)

Aw yeah, I used to want to read beginning to end, but got burned SO many times that I'm like nope, let's skim this, make sure there's not rape/bdsm/Merlin going nuts and killing Arthur kind of shit. XD

Haha aw, you're welcome! I still have them all bookmarked as well, though I've been reading nothing but Sherlock Holmes pastiches lately. LOL

That annoys me quite a bit, yes. Something that annoys me less but confuses me more are stories that use the "M/M" in the header properly... except it also includes "Gen" in the tags. And when you read the story it's ... still slash??? The author clearly doesn't share my definition of gen. Or slash. Which is also annoying when I'm specifically looking for gen fic... and a majority of it is slash or het shipping. Argh.
