Is True Grit a remake of the John Wayne movie, or otherwise related to it? Have you seen the earlier one? (I haven't seen either.)

They're related, and retellings of the same story. I haven't seen the John Wayne film, but spoke with my Mother-in-Law, who has. The credits in the movie, and some differences in the film, made us think that both the John Wayne film and the new Coen Brothers one spring from the same book, but that the new one is from the book and not from the film specifically. But I'd like to know more certainly!
