The Gimp is Free Software. Capital F, Capital S. It's not adware, nagware, shareware, freeware or any of that. There are no ads.

It's released under the GNU Public License. If you actually care, here's a definition of Free Software.

oh and for 4): GIMP is a bitmap editor, not a vector editor. Have a look at the truely excellent Inkscape for editing vector graphics like corel draw files.

I never got a good grip on corel draw, just photo editor or something like that

GIMP is more an image manipulation program (the IMP in GIMP) than an image creator. While you can do some neat stuff from scratch, it's got a fairly steep learning curve, particularly if you're coming from PS.

There are however, addons that allow you to run PS plugins (don't know about brushes) as well as an addon to make it user friendly to a PS user. The name eludes me for now.
