Bamboo fishing pole?

Mar 14, 2010 20:08

I picked out two perfect bamboo poles today. I even tried "casting" with them. They are delightfully flexy and springy.

I'm curious to know whether they will maintain that springiness when they are dried. They are still green now. Also, they are not absolutely perfectly straight. I can't see how that would be a problem for a fishing pole. I mean ( Read more... )

I don't understand the concept of outdoor activities.

BTW, since I've been stressing over whether or not I offended you, Fire Island always makes me giggle because I always picture it as this Village People sort of gay male playground and it always makes me laugh. You there makes me laugh even more. :)

1. It is not possible to offend me.

2. Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, but be advised that not all of Fire Island is Cherry Grove and the Pines. Most of it is very very nice. Sunken Forest is a strange grove of natural bonsai created by the ocean winds. I grew up on Fire Island beaches, mainly Robert Moses Park and Smith Point. My dad used to surf cast on Fire Island.

There's non-gay stuff there? I always thought of it being gay gay everywhere. Unless there's something you haven't told me about your Dad! ;)

Oh my god when I was 14 I had sex in the bushes at summer camp and a skunk came out and (thankfully) ran instead of spraying. Never again would I have sex in shrubbery.

Your biggest worry when having sex in the bushes on Fire Island would be poison ivy. It's everywhere, and it cannot be eradicated because it is part of the original ecosystem and actually holds the barrier islands together, slowing their inevitable erosion.

We used to use shellac on bamboo poles as a finish, after the eyelets were installed.

Cabela's or Bass Pro shops should carry replacement eyelets at reasonable prices, plus anything else you need to roll your own. Attaching is a mostly simple process of whipping the eyelet to the pole same as whipping rope. Silk thread is great (surplus suture is great if you can find it ) or B or C carpet thread works too.

I've never built my own rod or even contemplated it. From what I've learned about fly rods (I inherited a British made split cane rod from my uncle but fish with a graphite rod) the best in the world are made with American cane. A quick google search brought up this:

Might be more involved than you're willing to get but honestly I've never heard of anyone just taking a plain bamboo pole and making a surf casting rod out of it. But I'm a lake rat so what do I know...
