At the very very least, their insurance (if they have comp) will subrogate the living shit out of that jackass. Assuming someone bothered to get the company name and truck plate number, that is.
Thanks to the video-aware neighbour, the city is going to cover everything. (Can't remember if the drivers were both city employees or if they were contractors, but same shit.)
Interestingly enough, both cars belong to the same family; and the husband also works for the city. See cnn.com.
But yeah, they're both fucking clueless. God, the number of people who think flooring it is a decent way to deal with snow and ice.... It's not like NYC never gets shit like this, you'd think they'd get a clue. I could (barely) understand Vancouverites being idiots in the white stuff, but New Yorkers don't have as much of an excuse.
it's quite possible that the guy driving the front-end loader didn't really know how. i know that here, on Monday morning, they had guys who normally drive the garbage trucks using front-end loaders to try to clear the streets. but it was obvious from the way they kept backing and filling that they had no clue about what they were doing. they wound up blocking the intersection (the corner right by my house) completely, by pushing mounds of snow into it from each direction. then they had to clear that by sort of pecking away at the pile like ducklings. i'm rather surprised they didn't hit any cars - they did manage to re-bury a few that were almost dug out, including mine :-(
