Question about Austin, TX

Aug 25, 2008 12:58

I'm an EMT in Boston, so this is completely out of my region. =)

One of my friends has been living in Austin, TX for about a year now and is looking into taking an EMT-Basic class. What are your recommendations?

Any information will be appreciated!

Thanks, and stay safe out there,
~Beth

Personally, I'd look for an emt-basic class at a place that has a good paramedic program. I've just found it easier to do that in my paramedic program than some of my classmates who got basic training elsewhere.

TX is funny in that you have to get NREMT certified to become a basic, yet your TX basic certification lasts for 4 years and can be renewed with just CE hours or keeping your NREMT cert current. And NREMT is renewed every 2 years. *shrugs*

I'm in the Fort Worth / Dallas area, so I can't vouch too much for Austin other than they have a rescue EMT/'Medic team that isn't fire department based.

Good to know about the certification stuff.

I'll have to poke around for medic programs, now.

Thanks!

I actually have a question for you! I'm a new NYS AEMT-P/NREMT-P and I was wondering how hard it is to get reciprocity in MA. Any idea?

Where you have the NREMT-P, as far as I know, it's not too difficult to get reciprocity. I know a number of medics that have done that. Just contact OEMS-- go here for info.
