It is incredible.

That one film so perfectly sums up the problem with the world. The problem that is not Africa, but its position within the globalised economy.

A problem that it is hard to believe will ever go away.

Watch that film, and please come up with a solution.

I've got the book (though it's one of the many I've not got round to reading yet).

However, in terms of a solution I would say you've posed the problem slightly wrong. The core problem is the economic system that currently operates, because if it's just left as is, the problem will shift elsewhere.
