Damn. I can see how she feels like it's a "demotion" (I went from teaching Pre-AP English II in Houston to teaching freshmen in Louisiana, and I walked out of that job), but to think that she deserves the spot and that you can't handle it is complete bullshit.

Not that any seasoned English teachers want to look at it this way: but those who have taught upper-level classes would do a hell of a job teaching lower-level classes since they know first-hand what their juniors/seniors didn't know when they got into their classes. It helped a lot, especially with writing instruction, to have seniors and make plans for my sophomores based on what my seniors didn't know.

I hope things clear up between you two. It sucks to have to work with people who don't support you.

Don't let her reaction affect your self confidence. It's not about you - She is disappointed with what is happening to her next year. She isn't thinking about you or your abilities at all.

You can totally do AP Lit! The big difference between those AP kids and your current students: Motivation.

This means that you are a real teacher and she is a fake. You both have to know the material through and through, but on-level teachers have to convince students to learn everyday! AP kids do things because "they are supposed to". On-level kids need evidence that doing something is actually required.

You'll do fine. She might struggle. :-P

We'll see. I plan to blow her scores out of the water. I can't wait to see you in a couple of weeks!
