That really, really sucks, man. When are you back? Sept 1? We'll have a 'Welcome back to internet access' party. Makes Aliant really seem not bad at all.

Yep, back Sept 1.

Trying to take it all in stride now. I keep sending the angry letters, and I'll make a point of it when I check out.

Trying to see this "oppression" ;) as character-building, distraction-removing..

Only that it itself has sometimes become a distraction.. ;)

are they the only ISP in france? if not I'd drop them like a hot potato and find a better one. None of the blocked sites make any sense. That is really weird man.

Not the only ISP in France, to be sure, but the only one at the residence. It's all part of the package, and I've already paid for it.

Conveniently, they also have a clause in their Internet contract, stating that you can't ask for your money back. It's not expensive -- about €10/month -- but it's also neither what I expected, nor what I had gotten used to during the full month-and-a-half I'd already been her.

Also, I really don't have that much money, and I'm trying to save as much as possible to spend the last weekend before I fly out in Paris.

My local paper is your local paper, but we regularly go to time-eaters cracked.com and mila.com (My Life Is Average - hilarious & time consuming), not to mention facebook. Geekery includes ign.com and aintitcool.com. Radio feed: fredfm.ca - maybe you can listen to some local news between commercials and old music.

Still counting down. :)

facebook.com - not blocked! (Probably because they are too big to block.. Oh wait: both Apple and Microsoft are blocked.)
mlia.com - not blocked! (I assume you just switched the letters, and the other was a parked Go Daddy page)
ign.com - Blocked
aintitcool.com - Blocked
fredfm.ca - not blocked! (Ew.. really? ;))

So.. that's what? 3/6? That's 50% blockage, that is!
