VampaurorSummary: Harry would like to thank his Transition Assistant.
Harry flew through the sky, the night breeze fanning his face and ruffling his hair.
Two weeks after being infected with vampirism, Harry was finally enjoying his life again, thanks to Draco Malfoy. He had yet to thank Malfoy properly, but Harry was determined to do so, and soon. He'd graduated from biting his Transition Assistant to feeding from donors, but none of them satisfied Harry the way Malfoy had.
Harry leaned low over his broom and skimmed the rooftops. The night sky was overcast, disguising his silhouette. He'd only recently returned to work as an Auror; he didn't need to get a reprimand for being seen by Muggles. Harry cast a Notice Me Not charm and banked downward. He touched down lightly in Malfoy's garden, shouldered his broom, and strode up to the French doors. Harry knocked sharply and took a step back, awaiting admittance.
Eventually, Malfoy appeared on the other side of the glass doors. He unlocked them and opened one side, frowning at Harry.
"Potter? Is there something you need?"
You, Harry wanted to say. Instead, he settled for asking, "May I come in?"
Malfoy shrugged and stepped back, gesturing for Harry to enter.
Harry leaned his broom against the wall and produced a bottle of wine from the folds of his cloak. "I brought you this," he said, extending the bottle.
Malfoy accepted it and looked at the label. His brows rose in pleasant surprise. "What prompted this unexpected gift?"
"I never got to properly thank you for all the help you gave me," replied Harry. "Those first few days were quite rough, as you recall, and I wasn't the most compliant student."
"I certainly recall that part," Malfoy said drily. He turned and headed for the parlor, gesturing for Harry to follow. "Would you care for a drink?" he asked.
Harry moved up on Malfoy and nuzzled his neck. "I'd love one," he purred. Harry sensed the surge in Malfoy's blood as his pulse accelerated, just as he caught the subtle scent of arousal.
Malfoy twitched irritably and stepped away. "I'm not on the menu, Potter," he snapped.
Harry let him go. He was patient; he could afford to wait Malfoy out.
"I would like a glass of wine," said Harry. "Dean assured me that's a fine vintage."
"Dean Thomas?" asked Malfoy. "What is he doing these days?" As he spoke, Malfoy popped the cork on the wine and poured two glasses.
Harry took the proffered glass and said, "Dean is an up-and-coming artist, as well as a wine connoisseur."
Malfoy took a sip of wine and hummed in appreciation.
Harry's blood thrummed with desire, but he kept his distance.
"Have you settled back into Auroring, Potter?"
Harry snorted at Malfoy's subtle jab. "Yes, I'm back Auroring," he confirmed. "In fact, I have the singular distinction of being the DMLE's only Vampauror."
Malfoy chuckled and saluted Harry with his glass. "Good for you, Potter," he said. "I knew you could do it."
"I must admit, you had more faith in me than I did in myself," said Harry. "I wanted you to know how much I appreciated it." He finished his wine in two swallows and set the glass on a low table. "Would you like to go out for a bite?" Harry invited. His smirk indicated the pun was deliberate.
"Thank you, but no," Malfoy demurred. "I have a prior engagement this evening."
Harry's easy humor vanished in a flash. "A date?" he hissed, lips lifted to display his fangs.
Malfoy's chin lifted in challenge. "That is none of your business," he declared. They stared at one another in tense silence for a moment before Malfoy's stance and tone softened. "Look, Potter," he said. "I was the one who helped you through some of your darkest days. I'm the first person you fed from as a vampire. It's only natural that you may have developed some feelings for me or to believe we've formed a bond of sorts. However, the truth is, I was just doing my job, which was to transition you back into magical society as a vampire who can control himself and his more primal urges." Malfoy paused and took a deep breath before adding, "It's getting late. Thank you for the wine, and good luck." He led the way back to the French doors and opened them.
Harry didn't argue at being so abruptly dismissed. He may have been thwarted for now, but he had every intention of sinking certain parts of his anatomy into Malfoy's delectable body. Harry grabbed his broom and turned to face Malfoy.
"Thank you, Malfoy," he said curtly. He mounted the broom, kicked off, and called back, "I'll be seeing you."
