thoughts after seeing Cloverfield:

1. the characters are annoying, but i feel like that's standard for action/horror/disaster movies. they have to be characters that do stupid things so you can get pissed off at them.
2. i call bullshit about the time frame here. so supposedly the monster strikes around quarter to 1 in the morning. they do some shit for a while, stuff that has to take at least an hour real time, eventually they are in the spring st. subway. they supposedly walk 70 blocks underground, then turn and walk 15 more before hitting their destination. p.s. the girl is in stilettos...another beef i have. while the guy was ransacking the electronics store, you'd think she would have time to ransack a shoe store or something and get some suitable shoes on. even in the heat of the moment, i think you would realize "hey my feet kill and its likely that i'll be running for a long, long time." so anyway, this whole underground trek would take probably 3ish hours, so then they fight some things and doctor wounds and meditate for a bit and then they walk and find this girl's building, climb the stairs, all 57ish floors to the ROOF, rescue her, walk the 57 floors down and make it in time for their 6 am copter? i guess its possible but not really. kind of like the monster.
3. i also call bullshit on the fact that the subway station was abandoned! yeah right, like nobody else would look for shelter underground. subways are like halfway bomb shelters! i kept waiting for the characters to realize this.
4. i think, if you were to freeze frame the quick panoramic shot from when they are on the brooklyn bridge, you could see my window. hee. i might rent this when it comes out, just to catch it.
5. two fun effects of seeing this movie in the location that it takes place is that its really reassuring but also weird to come outside and see everything intact and also that i can't help imagining how the monster would destroy certain areas/buildings/landmarks. it would have been interesting to see it wreck union square. but then it would have gotten pretty gimmicky, like a "lets see how many interesting landmarks we can demolish in awe-inspiring ways" type thing. also, it was more upsetting than scary when it crushed the empire state building. actually, the whole thing was more upsetting than scary.
6. romantic subplots are usually dumb.
7. there's a good reason why i only see loud and action-y movies in theaters. i actually think comments and yelling from the audience help in this sort of movie. especially "oh SHIT!" that one always has a good effect.
