Thanks for taking the time to write this up! I never thought of doing extractions before I resized my icon, but now that you talk about it...DUH.

It's a pleasure! I'm glad you found it useful :D Doing it before resizing just makes everything ~smoother and you can even do a half-assed job at selecting, it takes care of minor things. ;)

CECE. I AM FLOORED. AND AMAZED. AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN.
The lasso tool. The evil lasso tool. That is your bff? Seriously?
YOU ARE MAGIC GIRL! With the lasso tool and the never actually sharpening and the fill colour layers for colour, and the gradients and the light blobs and the sheer perfection. Also, WORKING WITH CAPS AT THEIR ORIGINAL SIZE. I used to do that, then I reverted to 200x200, but now I am convinced that when removing background they will be pretty darn huge.
Basically, you are a genius Cece. And I cannot wait to explore all the tips and tricks this post has in it!

OMG, THANK YOU. I FEEL NOOBISH AND EMBARASSED FOR USING SUCH ELEMENTARY TOOLS. :P BUT THANK YOU for your kind kind words ♥
Heeeey, it's the polygonal lasso tool, okay, lasso tool's nicer twin c: lasso tool himself is truly evil D: But I hardly ever sharpen anything, true. The coloring build up (specially the Levels layers) take care of that. When some sharpening is really needed (rarely) I do it by the end with the high pass filter (Filter > other > high-pass > 0.2 to 0.4 radius), set that layer to soft light. And funny you'd say that, because I began resizing to 200x200px (after extracting) and coloring on that size when I read this & this (specially seeing this and thinking "wait so she does the coloring on the bigger canvas wut wut") by you. So we're even! ;P

Awww thank you, but you are the genius here, imho. It's very daunting to write you anything! I hope you find anything useful! And I hope you make lots of icons for me to stare and drool over :D

I HAVE COME BACK TO SAY THAT I AM NOW IN LOVE WITH THE POLYGONAL LASSO TOOL AND WILL NEVER LEAVE IT AGAIN. Seriously. I've gone between it and my old technique today and they are so awesome together and yeah. Therefore you are clearly amazing.

YES. BIG CANVASES FTW. They are just so easier to work in, because you can see the colours a little more clearly and then add what you want and yeah. AND DON'T BLAME ME. BLAME SAMANTHA WHO I BELIEVE DID IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!

Um, no. Just no. Seriously. I flail around in photoshop until I find things I love. And that is all. You are amazing bb! And yessss, there will always be icons!

LOL. Cece, are you me? It's like this tutorial came out of my brain. Mostly anyway.

I do that exact same thing with stamping layers, and half the time that's why I end up scrapping an icon because I am too lazy to go back a fix EVERYTHING since I stamped. Still I can't train myself out of doing it. Nice to see I'm not the only one with that problem, haha!

I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THE ADD/SUBTRACT TO/FROM SELECTION BIT. So you've definitely taught me something.

Also, adding the blue layer did change it heaps. You can 100% tell, shut up. Loved that you included 'awkward.' in your actual tutorial though. AND THAT YOU ICONNED AWKWARD. Jess got me into it. JESS DOES THESE THINGS. YOU CAN'T ESCAPE HER.

Anyway, this is a great tutorial. You are awesome, Cece!

:O I'M SO PROUD OF BEING ONE STEP CLOSER TO BEING LIKE YOU. ♥!!!!

But LOL this. So much. I know I shouldn't do it but when I realize what I did I'm already halfway through the icon with a dozen stamps :v Haha ugh I add layers that on afterthought change so little I don't even know what they were meant for. :p And get caught in such small details too.

AWKWARD IS SUCH AN ADORABLE (and AWKWARD) show. My younger sister told me to watch it, so I went in waiting for some run of the mill but mildly entertaining teen dramedy. Now I don't even know all my feelings about the characters & ships, they're surprisingly deep and multi-faceted! And when I saw Jess watched it too I was impressed at how good my show choices are :D And you like it too! So it's clearly a MUST WATCH. :D

Awww thank you! I'll never stop telling you you're awesome-r. :)

Thanks for sharing these tips with us --I've always had a lot of troubles with backgrounds and tried several suggestions, though I had no success (because I'm no good at icon making, mostly, duh). This one looks very smart, I'm going to try it soon, thanks heaps! :D
