There is so much neat phrasing in this, and it describes experiences so many of us feel.

We may be humming along just doing what we do without thinking much about it, but
I thought that I was the linchpin
But I see the machine keeps churning
is such a horrible feeling if it happen. Everything shifts, through depression and even despair, and heaven help the world if it reaches anger.

I'm with Toni, too, those last three stanzas are brilliant. \o/
