The Last Piece

“Put it on the ground.”

Her small frame belied a tacit might, the folds of her skirt and eyelids unmoving in the seconds beyond the demand until, after the space of the sounding and dying of an unseen dog’s shrill, doleful moan, her left foot evenly slid backwards, allowing her knee to meet the crackled asphalt with a stoic silence ( Read more... )

Awesome! It's so cool to see fiction this time around; it sort of feels a bit like an homage to our number five guy. I loved the world you created and then I was freaked out by the world you created when you revealed more about it, then I was emotional from the song (which is really beautiful, by the way). You took me all over the place in a good way, and demonstrated why you are here in the top four for sure. Good luck in the vote! :-)

Thank you! :) Trust me, I am always freaked out by the world we're creating! Thanks for reading and taking the journey of this one.

Absolutely captivating, and very intense. And ah so sad, given where the world is heading. Your writing is so evocative and I am in awe of the images you manage to paint!

Thank you so much! I touched that you found this to be painterly. Here's hoping that despite sad circumstances, we will carry on with the optimism in the human spirit that your piece this week showed!

This is so tender and heart-rending. I love how you gave the song such a textured context. Lovely.

Ah, no worries! It was nice to have a momentary mystery :)

Thank you so much for the kind words. I was worried that the dread and fear would smother the tender heart of it.

It seems weird to say I love this, because I definitely do not love this picture of the future! But the story itself is so enthralling that I couldn't stop reading, and then the song is really beautiful, and it's just a horrible but wonderful piece, if that makes sense!

It makes total sense! I felt a lot of love and hate while writing it-it's hard to inhabit that space. I'm thrilled you enjoyed both core elements. Thank you so much!

It was great to see fiction from you. I like the clever way you introduced a song into the story. This has a lot of weight, and the tension on the piece draws in the reader immediately. Well done!
