So, for the last 3 months or so, due to RL frenzies and flurries (AKA 2 weddings, four movings, and no funeral), I have had not a SINGLE visit to metafandomFannish life is actually a shiny bliss, if you don't have to wreck your little minds and brains on whatever severely serious hot-button topics is going on there

Its very safe to say, me, after ten years of fandom, and roundabout somewhat over 23,000 saved-on-harddrive fanfics and art and vids later its too late to change my habit

That made me curious and I had to check. For me it's 33,000 saved fics, circa 2450 vids and 7000 pieces of fanart. ^^°

I've always liked to have a copy of fic or video's for my comp if possible, the trend of only uploading streaming video's drives me crazy because so often youtube will remove them

its a de-facto state, that all vids nowadays are streams.
if one is lucky, a dl link is made available...

and ha! youtube removing them is my least problem!
half the vids these days are not streaming for me at all coz i have a german IP.

I am not even bothering asking the vidder for a dl link anymore. if its a working stream YT link, I just dl the vid with help of sites like keepvid.com or my fav. YT downloader like http://www.youtubedownloaderhd.com/

I get your argument about the multimedia aspect of some modern fanfics, that has all kinds of media incorporated, but when we are talking about purely written with words fic?

I don't have that many (only a few thousand currently - I usually delete them after reading and only save my favs) but if I didn't convert fics into pdfs to read later I'd never be able to read ANY fic. I travel so much and spend so much time in places that don't have interent that I'd never be able to read most fic if I didn't do that.

I can understand, in a way, why some authors might not like it - they could be worried about people fiddling with their work or dling, changing something small and them claiming it as their own. They lose control over the thing they have created. Of course, a way around that (for fic at least) is to provide their own pdf file for dl, which I've noticed a lot of people are starting to do. That and also realize that once you create something and put it out there, it is no longer something you can completely control.

see, that is like two different things:
the changing their stuff thing, and
the claiming as their own (by which is assume, you mean theft , and plagiarising).

the first thing, factually to me is, the moment I read any , really any authors fic, their fic has already been changed by my own mind, whether I saved that fic to my harddrive or not.
my own mind, the moment its clashing with the words of the fic, are changing your fic.
the metaphorical control over the fic could only be achieved, if the author also controls my brain.

by my stats that you can see, I have read ten thousands of fics.
some of them were perfect imo, and didnt needed "change".
but with some, my mind simply changed all the parts that I disliked, and only took the parts that it liked.

complete control on that level?
is like hollywood thinking, they could control in these days, how their media is distributed.
