Wow, that's a great video! I wonder if that's a mating behaviour?

A wildlife biologist who commented on the flickr photo says that its two males sparring. There was probably a female in the area and the winner of this gets to mate. Google for 'rattlesnake combat ritual' for more info.

That's really cool. I didn't realize they did that. I think it's even more amazing that you saw it happen!

and you wear lots of toxic chemicals while you do this hiking thing so that you don't end up with a nearly incureable case of lyme disease like me right?

ugh, toxic chemicals. yeah, normally i avoid that, but i've been re-thinking that lately and I was actually wearing some that day.

Is it good enough to just put it on the clothes assuming i'm covered head to toe like i normally am?

Hope you're feeling better and the insurance company is bending to your will.

well clearly my technique was so bad I didn't even find a tick....
but
I've heard Permethrin works pretty well. Also making sure you tuck your pant legs in and carefully check yourself, including in your hair after you go out.

though it says they don't drop from trees...which seems not true.. if they can crawl to the top of a piece of grass why not a branch on a tree?

If you do find a tick you should do a month of antibiotics. (2 weeks is inadequate and waiting for symptoms doesn't work out) Anyway if you find a tick let me know and I'll give you my doctor's info so you can be overly cautious with preventative treatment.
