Saw Sherlock Holmes today. I actually quite enjoyed it, even if it wasn't really Sherlock Holmes so much as Robert Downey Jr as a 19th Century British Detective, or, as the boyfriend suggested, British Iron Man. To me, it seemed like the kind of movie that someone who had never read a Sherlock Holmes story would expect a Sherlock Holmes movie to be

I enjoyed the movie because I basically left my love of the original stories at the door. I lol'd at all the Adler chemistry though because hell, that shit was too funny.

Even though it was quite far removed from Conan Doyle's original vision, most adaptations for television and screen to this point have been (though perhaps not so overtly). All that deerstalker crap with Watson being one IQ point lower than a shovel? Yeah no. At least Guy Ritchie was open with "HEY, WE'RE GONNA MAKE SUM ACTION SHERLOCK" and heck, that's all I really wanted from a Boxing Day movie.

lol yeah, the trailers pretty much tell you exactly how the movie is going to be, so no surprises there. XD God she annoyed the crap out of me though. I would have had more respect for the character if she'd left on that train halfway through x3

haha, yeah, I love how Watson is typically short, fat, stupid, and Holmes' father's age. At least this time he got some action, and was, y'know, competent. And not sixty. Haha, true. It wasn't Holmes Holmes, but it was lotsa fun :3

I'd have had more respect for her if she was even vaguely like the original Irene, at least original Irene did seem to genuinely compete with Holmes. In the movie she was your typical female faux villain with your typical female weakness: ~a man~.

It made me happy to have a useful Watson (plus Jude Law is always easy on the eye) and to some actual action (even if it went over-the-top). It's not going to win any awards for being true to its source but I still had a lot of fun.
