AIR
Ah, Air. This ridiculously depressing animu is one of my favorite series, one of the few I own legit American copies of, and one I could (and have) watch a million times. I am actually apparently a masochist and only really fall in love with things that make me bawl like a little girl, and AIR does that very, very well. But I can't help it. It's a damn near perfect anime.
1)The animation is gorgeous, the music is some of the best of any series, managing to be cheerful or sweet or hopeful or nostalgic or devastating just when it needs to be, the characters are cute and likeable, and their stories are funny and sweet and, most importantly, moving and absolutely, totally heartbreaking. The more I watch it, the more I appreciate AIR and the way the story is told, and how it goes from being about a boy and his first love to a girl and the woman who is in every way but biologically her mother, and their fight to stay together. I really can't say enough how moving and wonderful this show is. Love it, love it, love it.
Doctor/Rose
Yeah, you know how I said I only fall in love with things that make me cry like a girl? This is another one of those. I can admit that plot-wise, Doctor Who is a very stupid show. There are really only one or two 'good episodes' per season that you can watch without laughing at the stupidity of it all (although when Doctor Who is good, it's very, very good). Anyway, the reason anyone watches Doctor Who is for the characters, and right of the bat, I loved the Doctor and Rose.
At first it was because they were funny and adventurous and sly and just great to watch together, but then with the last episode of the first season, you got to see how much they meant to each other, and how much they'd do, and the lengths they'd go to, to protect (for the Doctor) and just be with (for Rose) one another. The minute the Doctor sent Rose away and she started screaming at the TARDIS to take her back, I was head over heels for this pairing. And then, of course, there was Doomsday. Cried like a little girl. That is the Doctor/Rose for me. The Doctor wanting to protect her, and Rose fighting like hell to be by his side, whatever the cost. Blissfully happy together, and completely, totally devastated apart. And of course, they always end up apart T_T
Eyes on Me (Angela Aki)
Yaaay, Angie. Eyes on Me was the song that made me fall in love with Angie. I was never a big fan of the song itself as sung by Faye Wong. Her Engrish irritated me and I just wasn't in to her voice, but when I heard Angie's version of Eyes on Me, I loved it. The simple piano accompaniment, the proper English (xD seriously, this was an issue), Angela's voice - it was Eyes on Me the way it was should have been all along. A simple, sweet little love song by a lounge singer.
NANA
Oh god, NANA. I have a love-hate relationship with NANA. I adore it as a series: it's compelling, it's dramatic, it's sad and nostalgic and melancholy, and the anime has great music, and the characters are complex and damaged and human and they don't always get a happy ending and things don't turn out how you'd expect, and people fuck up and drift apart and break up and move on and find other people. It's life. It's a great slice-of-life (albeit ROCKSTAR LIFE) series, and SOMEDAY I'D LIKE TO FINISH IT, YAZAWA! D:<
My 'hate' begins and ends with a single, but pivotal, character: Ren. I HATE REN. He's not a good boyfriend, he's a druggie, he may 'love' Nana, but they're bad for each other, and he only got back with/married her to keep her from Yasu, and I will never forgive him for that u.u I'm so very glad he's dead.
Maaya Sakamoto
MAAYA! I love Maaya. She's one of, if not my very, favorite singer. I found her with Gravity, the Wolf's Rain ED, and when I could, downloaded all the songs I could find of hers on Gendou. And the addiction started~ Of all the artists I had on my mp3 player, I think Maaya was the one who had the most songs. I have yet to find anything of hers I hate, although obviously some are more enjoyable than others.
Her voice is so angelic! She sings so purely and sweetly, and her songs (especially the ones with Yoko Kanno's music) sound so otherworldly. The epitome of her music is, in my opinion, The Garden of Everything. THAT is an otherworldy song, and along with her Shounen Alice CD, is what I think of when I think of Maaya.
She is, and always will be, Haruhi to me. I don't think I'd ever heard her act in anything before I saw her in Ouran HS Host Club (except maybe TRC as Tomoyo, but that barely counts), and I was knocked off my friggin socks when I found out that Maaya played Haruhi. Her voice was completely different, and her excellent portrayal really endeared Haruhi, and that series, to me.
