A/N: So warning, yes WARNING. MASSIVE, MASSIVE MASSIVE MASSIVE Spoilers for Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars but also AU seeing as the Master (yay Master!) is tagging along as captive!Companion. Brilliant, yes? Onto the story! Also? Major MAJOR character death.

The Master couldn't hide the utter relief he felt at watching the Doctor begin his trek back to the TARDIS. He knew just as well as the Doctor did that this was meant to happen but he also knew the Doctor.

He was extremely adept at interfering.

But he was returning now and they would depart. They'd leave this place behind. Same old life, as the Doctor said constantly. Only the rocket exploded and he turned back.

"No, Doctor." It was soft like a plea. "Come back to the TARDIS. Come back, we're waiting."

He kept walking away.

The Master was helpless against the ensuing chaos but he felt it. He felt the sick wave of Time fighting back, trying to take the proper course of action. Fighting against the Doctor. He grabbed the communication device the Doctor had given him and the TARDIS offered no resistance. For a moment he acknowledged how wrong things must be if she was allowing him this.

"Doctor."

"No time, Master, bit busy saving the day."

"You know this isn't right." he said, voice calm, controlled but still trembling underneath the faux strength. "Walk away, Doctor. Just..." Damn his own weakness, his voice was cracking because deep in his hearts he knew he wouldn't listen.

"Walk away."

"Not happening. I can do this. I can do anything!" he hissed, voice overly gleeful. Somewhere inside, it terrified the Master to hear it.

It was all falling apart but the Doctor was sending that idiotic robot toward the TARDIS with his key. He went to the console, still surprised that the TARDIS wasn't fighting against his trying to gain access. She knew. Oh, but of course she would know. "You know I can't allow you to do this, Doctor."

"Oh hohoho! You're going to stop me, Master? Master of what? A cage? Your own cage that I put you in? You won't stop me because you don't win this time." he sneered and he so wished he could block the voice out. That wasn't the Doctor. Not his Doctor.

He worked fast as he could, fighting wave after wave of Wrongness that was reverberating and moving around them. It was nauseating but he couldn't focus on that now but he didn't get the deadlock in enough time. The robot inside, the Doctor managed to use it to send a surge through the console. The last thing he felt was extreme pain and his body flying through the air.

Then darkness, so much darkness.

After a time, the darkness yielded but he knew it was too late. It was lost, everything was just lost or was it?

"Finally awake, eh?" came the Doctor's voice as he came round. "Sure you've got a nasty headache. You should take it easy. Just gonna drop this lot off and we'll be off again." he grinned then but it was more of a smirk. "Same old life."

The Master stared.

Not many words were exchanged during the brief trip but the Doctor noticed Adelaide and the Master exchanging words and her walking away with an agonized expression. "Anything I should know about?"

"No, Doctor, she's only shell-shocked. So much has happened." he lied easily.

"Right, of course." Not that the Doctor believed it but he would talk with the Master later. There was so much they could do now. Things would be different.

Goodbyes were said but not as they should have been. It was more shock and animosity on Captain Adelaide's part and the Master knew what she would do. She would protect the future of History and he only wished that she didn't have to bear that responsibility. He heard part of the exchange as they left the TARDIS but not all of it. It was still so very wrong. When the Doctor came back inside, the Master remained quiet.

"So, where to? I was thinking we might redo a couple of things." he said tossing off his jacket and grinning as he began adjusting the controls for another trip. "I mean with both of us, just think." He peeked over at his Time Lord companion, seeing the Master's shoulder's slump as he walked around to face his back.

The Master turned. "Yes." he whispered, raising Captain Adele's weapon and bringing it to bear on his oldest and best, enemy and friend. "Just think."

"Still trying to win? Defeat me? I did what none of them ever would! I broke the mold, isn't that up to people like us? Renegades? Exiles? We're the winners. We can change things."

The Master's aim didn't waver.

"Side by side, Master, as you always wanted. The both of us."

He shook his head then and laughed. "Do you remember, Doctor, when I saved you from the Valeyard during your trial?" he questioned.

"Of course I do, what kind of stupid question is that?"

"Do you know why I did?" The Doctor shrugged, uninterested and the Master continued. "Because he wasn't you and I hated him because of all the things he wasn't."

"Oh don't go getting sentimental on me after all this."

"It isn't being sentimental, it's what I have to do. I have to save you." he said. "The only way I know how."

"Master, put that down. We can talk about things. Don't cause a fuss." he said, voice condescending. The Doctor watched as the Master hesitated, lowering the very dangerous weapon slightly and he took a step forward.

It came to bear on him again. "Still trying to win." he sneered, eyes narrowing on him.

"There are no winners here anymore. We are the last of our kind and we end, this night."

A flash of blue and the Doctor crumples. Another and the Master follows.
