I always wondered why they came out whenever it rained. And this always make me walk on the road so I wouldn't accidentally squash them. But sometimes I still do... this gives me goose bumps and makes me feel bad =/

I rather assumed that they were dependent on moisture and their inability to return to the soil was to be blamed on sunlight drying them up... I suppose this process could be accelerated by energy required to reproduce, or at least the cellular mass in accordance to their size.
