This paints a picture of a Woody Allen-esque movie where a man can only sexually satifsy his girlfriend by reading her technical manuals and the legal notices section of the newspaper.

Very interesting entry. Great to get more of an insight in regards to your job and how things are for you. Your journal is really fascinating and I enjoy reading it... your entries are really interesting and I love seeing the photos. It gives those who read your journal another perspective.
I only have one question for you at the moment - How long have you been working on the ships themselves?
The phrase "the mess" always makes me laugh whenever I see/hear someone use it :D

Wow, so you're going UP the Strait of Malacca and then back DOWN?

If I had money for a plane ticket--and no job to think about--I'd join you for this circuit. And I'd be more than happy to pay the $10 a day, too.

Like I told you, I lived in Penang for 6 years. During that time I've also visited Malacca, Phuket (2x), Langkawi (check out the marble factory...not the round ones to play with, but the cut rock kind), Singapore (uhhhh...4 times?) and Bangkok. No, wait...we went to Bangkok when we lived in HK, before Penang -- but I digress.

Penang suggestions:Sights -- you'll dock near Fort Cornwallis. There's also some kind of museum nearby. (I'd suggest more, but you're only there one day. Sucks. Let us know if any US Navy ships are in port that day ( ... )

You are living a life I'd love to live for a year or two. I often check the listings on The World to see if they need a librarian :)

We cruised with RC last week. We had a good time. I think our fave spot was going up on the helicoptor pad to star gaze. No one else seemed to know about that spot.

Coming from a city with all the light pollution to geeting to see all the stars was totally awesome. That part of it all, I totally envy you.
