I like "No Church in the Wild"! That's the first thing I've heard involving Kanye West that I liked at all, and I like it a lot.
That JJ Burnel song is fantastic! I've only heard one other song of his, and it isn't nearly as catchy. I'll have to look for more-- do you have any recommendations for where to start?
I'm surprised at how quickly I recognized Jack Lukeman's vocals. After you posted some of his stuff before, I listened to a 90s album from him, with a bunch of Brel covers, and liked it. It's fallen out of rotation, but I should go back to it.
I enjoy the Banshees deep cuts you've been posting. Post-Juju, I tend to glaze over a bit, and not really notice much. But the songs you pick seem stronger when plucked from context and put in a mix. Strange.
I'm pretty sure "No Church In The Wild" is the only Kanye West song I've ever liked at all too, and I had no idea who it was when I first heard it - I think it was in a Denzil Washington movie, and I just thought "hmm, must check the closing credits and track that one down". I could live without the rapping parts to be honest, but as seems the case with quite a lot of hip-hop, if you ignore the misogyny and bling etc, there's often some very nice production and creative stuff going on in the music itself
( ... )
Have you heard Linea Aspera, who released an album on Dark Entries last year? You're the only one I can think of who might by as excited about them as I am, and I can't wait until they show up on a monthly mix to mention them :)
I totally missed this comment until recently, sorry about that.
Yeah, I do know Linea Aspera, and I like them a lot....I've just finished my February mix, which I thought they'd be on, but my "new system" still has some kinks in it, so I overlooked them yet again. I suspect they'll make it onto my March mix though. Probably "Eviction", which is my favourite track of theirs I think, though "Malarone" is great too. I haven't actually heard their full album yet, just about 5 or 6 tracks that they had for download on their bandcamp page a while before the album came out, but I will remedy that soon.
Linea Aspera are no more, by the way, in case you didn't know, but the silver lining is that Alison Lewis has another project called Keluar, and it's really really good...possibly even better than Linea Aspera...have a listen:
I knew Linea Apera were defunct, but had no idea Lewis already has new recordings out.
Interesting how similar the melodies and structures are to LA. Sounds like she was doing the lion's share of the songwriting. On a first listen, I think I slightly prefer the gritty analogue production of Linea Aspera. But Keluar sounds damned good, and I look forward to a lot of repeat listening. Thanks for the heads-up!
