i very much dislike this fad of aligning one's particular foe with nazi germany (reference: the article i posted in my journal a while back about the deseret book CEO who equated the nazis with the gay rights movement). i really don't think any of these comparisons are valid, considering the vastly different contexts. the nazis didn't rise because no one was paying attention; they rose because there was a social and economic climate in post-WWI germany that was fertile soil for just such ideas. it wasn't because the dissidents didn't speak up; it's because there were relatively few (german) dissidents to speak of. many people were despondent and clung to the only political rally-cry that gave them hope for their children ( ... )

I was simply making the case that if power goes unchecked - if dissident voices are so quickly and unapologetically marginalized and discredited, if there isn't anyone who can effectively criticize the decisions made by those in power - the dangerous socio-political climate of which you speak is born.
