Ok. I know I do this a lot, but this is the best article I have found yet on this particular topic. If you only read one article posted in this political soapbox of a journal, READ THIS ONE!

my favorite line?

Pollsters like to ask voters which candidate they’d most like to have a beer with, and on that metric Bush always wins. We prefer to ask which candidate is better suited to the governance of our nation.

*clap clap clap clap clap* and again, i rank the new yorker as my favorite magazine. this is the november 1st issue. think anyone will get a chance to read it before the election? probably won't make any difference anyway, as the new yorker already has a liberal base.

btw, did you see the "our opinion" for president and governor in the tribune? pro-huntsman, pro-bush (running alongside a bagley cartoon with an unflatteringly monkey-like drawing of bush, stating "the choice is simple." are these people dumb enough to not get it?) psh. and i was getting so excited about how liberal the tribune was seeming! nah, apparently it's only in the reader opinions, not those of the paper. silly me.

ha. how absurd would that be if the opinions of the newspaper actually reflected the opinions of its readership.

is there any better demonstration of my point? jemperly October 26 2004, 22:09:00 UTC
incidentally, another lj companion linked me to this today:

scroll down a little to get to the public opinion forum and the editor's note. the latter says that they've preempted some syndicated columns in order to run many of "the large volume of letters" it received after sunday's op ed.

there are 18 letters on that page. 17, count 'em 17, were appalled at the paper's sheeplike bush endorsement.

the lone remaining letter was upset by their choice for governor. hey, at least they had the balls to run those letters. something tells me the behind-the-scenesters at the paper are of somewhat differing opinion that the writers and editors themselves.
