Canon: Fullmetal Alchemist
Character: Winry Rockbell
Timeline: Roughly ch 95
Personality: In her canon, Winry was born in 1899 in the fictional country of Amestris, one which parallels Germany but with various anachronisms. Due to the time period, and the village she was raised in, Winry is significantly more mature, confident, and independent than one would expect of someone her age. This is an aspect carried by almost all the children of FMA, and not just the primary and secondary characters, even background characters are shown to already have a good deal of independence. An example being Nelly, a girl and friend of the Rockbells and Elrics who already takes care of the animals and farm her family owns. For what we've seen of Rizenbul almost all of the kids take up their parents trade at an early age.

She grew up in a loving household with her parents and grandmother were very patient, kind, and encouraging but it was her own pride and understanding of the situation that made her want to live up to the Rockbell name. She took up both trades from a very young age and showed remarkable talent for both fields, particularly magitech which involved skills as a mechanic and mage.

Once someone gets to know her, the most prominent features of Winry are her determination and intelligence. She isn't the kind to tolerate self-deprecation or wallowing in self-pity, and definitely does not stand for anyone giving up before they have even started. Winry rarely ever does anything half-way, when she decides on something, she throws on it entirely.

This is particularly obvious when it comes to her work. Granted, a lot of the reason she studies so much is so she can help the Elrics, but she genuinely loves to learn and be challenged. What she loves most is being given something she has yet to see or know about, and taking it apart--both figuratively, and literally. It extends into her having a great curiosity to just about everything and everyone which can sometimes land her in a difficult position. She takes great pride in her work, both as a mechanic and doctor and has great respect for anyone who is passionate about their work, whatever it may be.

She's a pretty sentimental character sometimes. She has very deep value for family, whether it be blood or otherwise which is why she is always constantly worried about the Elrics, and thus appears so often aggravated and angry (particularly at Ed). Her family values shine through in not only how she loves the Elrics, and how she treasures the memory of her parents and grandmother. Even if someone is older than her she might come off as mothering sometimes--she knows better than to pamper them since it would come off as patronizing, but she will butt into someone's business if her concern becomes extreme. She also always has her door open to discuss problems if anyone ever wants to come to her of their own accord. She manages to do much of her nudging in a very inconspicuous manner.

Ironically, even though she is kind-spirited in that manner, she also has has a terrifyingly large temper. Anger is something that Winry unfortunately has a lot of, to the point of it almost being unhealthy. In some ways it helps--she gets angry more than she gets upset so it can serve as a driving force as opposed to wallowing--but anger of course is a very dangerous emotion so it sometimes leads her to take very aggressive and impulsive actions. This is shown in small portions by her habit of wrenching or punching people when they annoy her, which happens regularly (at least where Ed is concerned) but even this is only scratching at the surface. After all, she was willing to pick up a gun and point it at someone, and even if she didn't shoot that is still a very significant action. She is a person easy to anger, but easy to forgive (or at least tolerate). She isn’t the type to hold grudges and despite her tantrums she would never seriously harm anyone close to her, and learns to persevere both emotionally and the presence of others.

Despite everything she has been through she remains quite optimistic and has a generally cheerful attitude. She has a sometimes quirky, sometimes odd sense of humor and loves to tease and taunt those she is fond of. It has a habit of getting her into a lot of trouble, but she somehow always manages to slip out. Only on very rare occasions does her true anger, bitterness, and depression for all the things that have happened. She can be quite impulsive at times, sensitive, and shrill but she does mean well, and has a heavy sense of duty.

Background: Winry Rockbell grew up in a village called Rizenbul. It was a tiny place settled in some grassland, where everyone knew each other. It was a tight-knit community, despite the acres that usually separated homes. She was the only child of the two doctors, Sara and Urey Rockbell. Her grandmother on her father’s side is Pinako Rockbell, and an automail mechanic and an engineer.

Winry grew up along with the Elric family, consisting of Edward, Alphonse, and their mother Trisha. Her memories of their father Hohenheim are vague, since he left when they were all very young. The Elrics were like a secondary family and home to her. From a very early age Winry studied her parents vocation, but she always seemed more interested in automail. Since automail engineering requires a good amount of medical knowledge she tried to create a balance between the two. Her life was mostly an idyllic one. When not spent pressed into her parent's medical books, or her grandmother's tools, she and the Elrics would spend time together exploring the plains and hills of Rizenbul.

Things took a turn for the worse when she was about six years old, Winry’s parents entered into the Ishbal War as doctors helping the Ishballan. Shortly after this, Trisha fell victim to an illness that had spread throughout the village, and she died, leaving the two Elric brothers in the care of Pinako. Unsurprisingly the two of them had a very difficult time coping with this, especially considering the absence of their father. Winry tried her best to be there for the two boys that she considered her brothers, but with their mother gone they just became more and more distant. The picturesque life they had led up till then had started to crumble, and it only became worse from there on out.

Some time later, two significant things happened. One was the death of Winry's parents while they were on duty out in Ishbal, serving both Amestrians and Ishballans alike. They had been killed by an Ishballan monk known only under the alias of Scar, a man that they had saved, but whom, in his distraught and frenzied state over the crimes Amestris had committed against his people, attacked them. The second was Edward and Alphonse finding a teacher named Izumi who would show them the ways of martial arts and alchemy. The two boys went away to train under her in her hometown of Dublith. During this time, Winry was similarly engrossing herself in her training as well, training on how to create automail and on a more theoretical level, take care of patients. The Elrics' time with Izumi was short, but they were able to learn a lot from her--most importantly, in doing that, they were able to gain what they believed was necessary to enact their plan.

The plan of reviving their mother. They didn’t realize that in attempting this illegal action they were breaking the most important rule of alchemy, that of equivalent exchange: giving up the same amount for what you receive. They had all the necessary ingredients for a human body, however there is no price that can equal a soul and that ended in disaster. Edward lost one of his legs, and Al his entire body in the process but Edward gave up one of his arms to attach Alphonse’s soul to a suit of armor.

Both boys, particularly Edward, were a mess after that incident, and it was thanks to the effort of a man from the military by the name of Roy Mustang that he was finally able to snap Ed out of his depressed state. He had come searching for them believing them to be much older, and in the process found the remains of their failed attempt at human transmutation. Accompanying him was one of his subordinates, a woman by the name of Riza Hawkeye who at first Winry acted rather impertinent towards. She had come to hold some resentment towards the military as a whole, feeling them responsible for so many tragedies that had befallen their country, frightened that they were now trying to steal Ed and Al, and of course, the murder of her parents. In the end, however, after they talked Winry came to hold a great deal of admiration for the Lieutenant, and was inspired to do her best to support the Elrics, even if that meant supporting Ed in his role of dog of the military.

Thanks to that push given to him by Mustang, Edward made the decision that he would join the military, so that he and Alphonse could have access to research materials that would hopefully give them what they needed to learn how to fix their bodies. Edward got automail, and managed to learn how to control it in one year---an accomplishment that usually takes much longer. They left for the military shortly thereafter, and would visit for the occasional tune up to Ed's automail, but other than that they were dedicated to their task. As testimony to this, one of the first things they did when Ed was certified, was to burn down their house.

One day, however, the two boys return and Ed's arm is completely and utterly destroyed. Though she is pissed beyond belief, Winry and her grandmother work for three days to complete a brand new automail arm for Edward. Unfortunately Winry makes the mistake of forgetting one bolt in Edward's new automail which ends up being a big problem indeed. As far as she knows, it's partially responsible for landing Edward in the hospital after it gave out in a fight he was in.

Winry began to get more involved in the story when she went to Central to fix Ed’s automail when he was unable to come to Rizenbul. There she met Maes Hughes, a member of the military and one who had become friends with the Elric brothers. She too grows very close of him and the rest of his family and she is able to shed some of her fears on him concerning the two Elrics viewing her as nothing more than their mechanic, when for always she has considered them brothers despite their lack of blood connection. He is able to quell those fears, explaining that people like Ed and Al don't like to burden others with their troubles. This in turn helps her to be able to quell a feud happening between Edward and Alphonse, when Alphonse begins to wonder if Edward completely fabricated him and all his memories, a fear fueled by Edward's inability to communicate a fear he has long since wanted to speak with Alphonse about. The real fear, and something that Winry and her grandmother have always known, was Edward's belief that Alphonse must blame him for everything that happened.

From there the Elrics decide to pay their teacher in Dublith a visit. Seeing that Ruhr Rush Valley, the automail capitol of Amestris, is on the way, Winry insists that they take her along so that she may visit it. A thief by the name of Paninya steals Edward's state watch and Winry manages to catch her, but in typical fashion her real reason in doing so was so that she could examine her automail legs. Winry is very impressed by that handiwork and convinces Paninya to take them to her mechanic. He is a man named Dominic, and Winry pleads with him to make her his apprentice but he absolutely refuses no matter how many times she asks.

A storm brews trapping everyone in Dominic's solitary home at the worst possible time, just as his daughter-in-law starts to give birth. The bridge that serves as the fastest way to Rush Valley has been broken and cannot be fixed even my alchemical means, so Dominic leaves to take the long route and return with a doctor. Knowing that waiting so long for a doctor could be detrimental to both the health of the child and the mother, Winry takes things into her own hands and manages to safely deliver the baby, even though she only worked from theoretical knowledge. In return for doing this, Dominic hooks Winry up with another very skilled and fabulous automail mechanic in Rush Valley. His name is Garfiel, and when Edward and Alphonse continue north to Dublith, she remains behind to apprentice under him, gaining many clients and friends in the process.

The next time the Elrics pay her a visit is, when once again, Edward has heavily damaged his automail and is in need of repairs. Through them Winry meets Ling, a prince from the eastern country of Xing, and his guardians Ran Fan and Fu. Together all of them return to Central for various reasons, Winry's being that she wants to see Hughes once more. Upon returning, however, they learn of Hughes death, and how Maria Ross is currently the suspect in his murder. Winry pays a visit to Gracia Hughes and Elisia, family of Hughes in an attempt to console them and come to terms with his death as well. Edward eventually appears as well, and explains to all of them the circumstances under which Hughes died.

A series of events occurs thereafter in which Winry is uninvolved, but leads to the Elrics trying to lure Scar out in an attempt to capture him. Winry happens to overhear news of their involvement in this while out in the streets, and becomes frightened for their safety, giving chase to the two. She manages to finally reach them, Scar included just as Edward reveals that Scar was the one who killed her parents after they had saved him. Shocked and overwhelmed, Winry loses herself and attempts to kill Scar, but is stopped and protected from him by Ed, while Al drives him away. Ed remains with her for a while to console her, and after ensuring her safety returns to help Al.

Winry goes back to return to Rush Valley at the request of her clients, and at the train station makes a vow with Edward that the next time she cries at his behest, it will be from happiness. She realizes as the train rolls away, that she has fallen in love with him.

When next Winry appears with the Elrics, it is after they have traveled to the north, to the border of Drachma and Amestris. There she is essentially a hostage to keep the Elrics in line. She creates new automail for Edward, more fitting to the snowy climate of the north, and Ed and Al are upfront with her about the situation, filling her in on most of what is happening. Kimbley, the man overseeing the Elrics and Winry, is on the trail of Scar and Ed joins him. Winry too comes along under the pretense of wanting to ensure that Ed's automail worked well, but in truth she too wanted to see Scar again. When the two finally confront again, Winry treats some of his wounds, and asked him why he did what he did. Winry realizes that killing Scar would be a hollow victory, and that her parents would not want her to become a murderer; that someone has to be the one to stop the cycle of revenge and violence, so while she by no means forgives Scar, she decides to take the higher ground.

Having had a degree of closure with him, she comes up with a plan to help him escape, along with getting her out of being a hostage. Under the pretense that Scar has captured her, he uses Winry as a hostage of his own to get out of Briggs safely. He, Winry, Mei Chan, two chimeras, and eventually Al as well travel south and split up along the way. Finally in Liore even Alphonse stays behind with his father, and Winry continues with some accompaniment till she reaches her home in Rizenbul.

Edward, with two other chimeras, and Ling who has now become integrated with the homunculus Greed are there and Winry is once more filled in on what is happening. Edward tells her of the danger that is approaching this country, of the Promised Day, and advises her to take Pinako and flee. Instead Winry gives him a good whack with her wrench and tells him that he will do what needs to be done without fail. Edward and his company leave and Winry faithfully and patiently awaits them.

Abilities/Additional Notes: The thing that Winry has going for her most is her intelligence. From the day she was born Winry was raised amongst scholars and people who were incredibly proficient at their work. Even Hohenheim, who left when she was so young left an impact on her. He was very studious and a great alchemist, something that her best friends the Elrics took after. Both her own parents were great doctors, and instilled in her a great sense of enthusiasm and compassion to follow their footsteps. Her grandmother, a great automail engineer also inspired her to work towards that vocation. While in many regards Amestris is 'behind' quite a number of worlds, with her drive and determination Winry is the kind of person who can pick up and learn things pretty quickly.

Thanks to this background, Winry is both a doctor and a mechanic. She had taken care of a score of people, and a large part of the automail business involves physical therapy so that people can learn how to use their new limbs. This means that Winry works a lot with people, and a lot with some people who may not be the happiest or most patient of people. It has in turn given her a strong amount of understanding and patience of her own so she is particularly good reading others.

What probably stands out the most about Winry, however, is her fortitude. She has seen her fare share of troubles, but she manages to keep a cool head throughout them.

Oh. It should probably be noted that she is pretty good with a wrench. So if she is angry, and picks one up, it is best if you duck. Better yet, run far away.

When it comes down to it, though, Winry isn't a trained fighter. She is stronger than she looks, because of all her work with automail, but she would do poorly against another person who has had more experience than her. Not simply because she would be outdone is just overall physical fitness and experience, but it would take a lot to bring Winry to the point where she would have to seriously hurt someone. An animal or monster might be different, but another person? That'd be difficult. Her parents were killed saving the lives of others, and so she would consider it the gravest sign of disrespect if she ever did something like that, and the thing Winry fears the most is putting to shame the two people who mean the most to her. This, however, doesn't mean she would never do it.

The fact that she forms attachments so quickly can also be considered a weakness to some degree. Winry tries to find the best in everyone, and sometimes she gives people who more chances and doubt than they deserve. Part of it is due to a somewhat naïve desire to believe that there is good in everyone, so that she can try and understand why some of the things back in Amestris are the way they are.

Sample Journal Post: [There's a tapping sound before a young voice can be heard]

Usually I don't think it's very polite to look a gift horse in the mouth, especially if said horse is something mechanical [pause, it doesn't really continue the idiom very well, does it?] but considering the circumstances I find myself in, and the fact I've never seen something like this it's hard not to. I mean, it's a phone right? I've never seen or even heard of one this small and compact existing back home. I doubt even the military has them.

So...so yea. If anyone is hearing this and can shed some light on what's going on, I'd really appreciate it.

Winry glared at him for a moment and when she received no response she took in a deep breath to steel herself, but she wasn't done quiet yet.

"I've talked with a lot of people since coming here, Ed and it's been evident both in how they act and what they themselves tell me. They care about you, they've been worried about you, and they know better than I do whats happened all this time, and what you've done. Yet they still stand by you no matter what, and do you know why Edward? Because they care about you. There are so many other people around who like you and need you and want you to be happy yet you refuse to acknowledge that and dwell on things that can't be changed. You have to wake up and look at what matters now and what you can do now."

Winry knew she was no longer before coherent, but it was like her mouth had gotten a mind of its own and was running. All the things she had always wanted to say, yet was too afraid to voice for fear of hurting his feelings were being spat out.

"And while we're talking about what you can and cannot do, why is it that no matter how unrelated you are to something that happens to someone you care about, you always try to make it all your fault and come up with some bullshit excuse for why everything that ever happened always comes back to you. Yea you made mistakes but who the hell hasn't, and haven't you been punished enough for them. My disappearing had absolutely nothing to do with you and if you dare say otherwise I will punch you."

Even though she had managed to quiet herself a little after her first outburst she had steadily been gaining back the fervor again and was back to shouting at this point.

"Jeez I can't even think coherently any more to say all that you need to hear Edward Elric. The only thing you are guilty of is being a complete and utter moron!" And with that, even though he had said nothing, simply because she was so furious and needed some outlet, she gave him a swift kick to the shins. Except...she ended up hitting his prosthetic which sent a jolt of pain up her leg.

She let out a small howl and pulled back her foot, holding it and hopping around on one foot before sending him a furtive look. "I bet you're going to blame that on yourself too, huh?!"
