I didn't realise Memoirs of Geisha was being produced. Last I heard about it, Spielberg was going to do it but didn't have time in the near future. So it seems they got someone else to ( Read more... )

Spielburg's doing it? How disgusting. Why can't he stick to big budget action scripts and leave projects like this to more artistic directors. I'm not saying that it won't be ok, but it could be a masterpiece in the hands of a different director.

It's directed by Rob Marshall. Spielberg didn't want to direct it, but he is one of the producers. I really hope they don't ruin it for me because I loved the book.

I would call that better news if I hadn't watched the trailer and done some research on the cast. I really don't have high hopes for this film and it pisses me off because the book was so good. Unless the trailer was very misleading (which they sometimes are), I don't see anything fantastic coming out of this.

well, it's a movie for those who haven't read the book. kind of like Breakfast at Tiffany's, Troy and all those other great books turned into unrelated movies.. not really, but you know what i mean.

i don't really think the director is the only issue. it's just a book that cannot have all of its feeling conveyed through film. it's a good read and i like the way it's pictured in my head.

I guess you must like movies as much as I do. It's one of my favorite topics of conversation. ^_^ Back when I first heard about the Memoirs of a Geisha movie, I was rather disappointed that they were using so many Chinese actors when the characters are Japanese. Zhang Ziyi also had to learn to speak English for the part, because she really didn't know any. I believe she learned a bit of English in school, but we all know how well foreign languages stick when we've only taken a few years in high school. Anyway, judging from the trailer, I'm actually impressed with her English. It doesn't sound as bad as I was fearing it would. I hope this adaptation is quality, because I really enjoyed the book.

I did too (enjoy the book).. so I have big hopes for this one. I didn't know she had to learn English! Why did they choose so many Chinese actors?

I did not read exactly why they chose to use Chinese actors instead of Japanese ones. Maybe it's because Ziyi Zhang and Michelle Yeoh are especially well-known to American audiences, and they wanted the name draw. As for more minor characters also being predominantly non-Japanese: Who knows? Maybe it has something to do with availability.
