Personality:
"Kushieda has always been beaming with such radiance ever since the beginning.
The time when I met her too. And now she's still radiant." - Ryuuji Takasu
"You are the moon. Minori-chan is the sun. If you be with her, you'll just get burned out." - Ami Kawashima
And for the most part in the animanga, that seems to be true. Minori Kushieda, according to TV Tropes, approaches everything with so much energy that she makes the surrounding people look lifeless. In contrast to the violent nature of Taiga, Minori is always smiling and cheerful. And if there's something about Minori, it's that her energy never, ever seems to run out. She's very lively and is always running around, singing out random songs, planning something devious, doing something completely weird and eccentric, and spurting out nonsense in high spirits that sometimes only she can understand. She can also be very hot-blooded and passionate about the things she does and loves. She's very friendly, very optimistic and happy-go-lucky, and she sometimes appears as a ditz and an airhead. Minori is hyperactive and is the type of girl who goes for the challenge. She's eccentric and "weird by nature", and Ryuuji, who once liked her, even said that sometimes he couldn't understand a thing that she's saying. Minori talks and babbles a lot, and she has a very overactive imagination and a flair for the dramatic.
Minori doesn't judge anyone based on their appearance, as she acted very friendly towards Ryuuji since the beginning despite his "murderous eyes" and she is also "The Palmtop Tiger", Taiga's best friend. She tries to see and get to know a person before she makes assumptions or judges them. Despite her airheaded tendencies, Minori is actually quite smart and is very perceptive of others. She realized and saw that Taiga and Ryuuji loved and cared for each other even if their words denied it, she is one of the few people to see Ryuuji for the gentle person he is, and is also not fooled by Ami's acts of innocence.
When Minori finds herself a friend, she will always cherish and treasure them. She worries about them a lot and she doesn't like to see her friends fighting amongst one another and will always be the first one to try and think of ways to ease the tension. Minori is selfless when it comes to her friends. She will do her best to cheer them up when they are feeling down, she will protect and save them when they need her, and if need be, she will also be the one to talk them down seriously, get some sense into them and let them see the truth that they are trying to hide from if she knows that it's for the best.
Minori is very high-spirited and she rarely gets angry, but when she does... she gets a little scary. Maybe it's because people are so used to seeing an energetic and lively Minori, that they forget that she too is prone to feelings like anger or sadness. She tries her best to keep herself composed but when Minori does explode and gets angry, she becomes waaay different from her radiant self and she tends to do and say harsh things bluntly that may hurt other people, even if it's the truth. But that doesn't happen often though, and only when her friends are involved or when someone judges her and her actions without trying to understand her first. However, Minori is also the type of person who easily forgives, especially when it's her friends.
"The reason why Kushieda seems to be so sparkling, might not only be because she's lively and energetic... that's right, [she's] blowing away weakness, huh?" - Ryuuji Takasu
However, behind her genki-ness, behind her carefree and happy-go-lucky attitude, lies a very complex character. It is even implied in the series that her airheaded tendencies may be a facade. In other words, Minori is an onion. One with many layers.
Minori is very good at hiding her own feelings, putting a front of energy, cheerfulness, and liveliness so that no one can see her own feelings of weakness, insecurities, and her sense of guilt. When she gets scared or afraid, she sings at the top of her voice to get rid of it and her genki behavior seems to be an overcompensation for the negative feelings that she holds deep inside her. Minori is actually very empathetic and introspective and she often thinks about deep and heavy stuff, but vents off the weighty thoughts with a genki, carefree attitude. She can be serious and talk about deep things, a side of her that she rarely shows. It is also seen in the series Minori is not the type of person who chases after fantasies, who believes in people who's all talk and no action. She's the type of person who doesn't hope and long for something she knows she can't have.
Minori doesn't let just anyone see the side of her that is deep and contemplative, and she only talks to a very few about what she is truly feeling and thinking, but she still can't let her guard down and lower the facade long enough to let anyone see her weaknesses if she can prevent it. There are only a few that has seen through this facade of Minori, and even Ami, who has seen through Minori, has told her that she's very good at faking. When Ryuuji comments on how Minori is a very kind person, she tells him that she really isn't, because she is arrogant and dishonest.
And she is; Minori is both arrogant and dishonest to herself, and to others. Arrogant in a way that she can be presumptuous and thinks she knows everything there is to know about her friends and what's best for them, especially about their happiness and what they really need. Minori is dishonest because unlike her friends, she doesn't show and express what she truly feels. Minori keeps all her negative feelings bottled up inside her... which, more often than not, only ends up hurting her more and making things difficult for her. All these feelings explode inside of her and she ends up spacing out, avoiding and keeping a distance from those whom she cares for, and being somewhat emotionally unstable. She rarely talks to people about what she truly feels even though it usually helps her get all the negative feelings she has out and makes her feel a bit better. This is because Minori always manages to work things out by herself in the end, no matter how hard or difficult the situation is, she always stands up.
Minori is the type of person who encourages people to stand up and try again after they fail, but in truth, she cannot take and accept her own failure lightly. When the softball team loses because of a mistake she made, she blames herself for it and takes it so hard that she doubles her efforts and refused to do anything remotely fun. She is hard on herself everytime she fails, and even if it seems that these memories and feelings of failure are gone because of her lively and energetic nature, they are still there buried deep inside her.
Minori is actually very sensitive, and she still ends up breaking down even when she has told herself that even if it's hard and painful, she will do her best never to cry again. She does her best to appear strong, brave, and happy in front of her friends, even if inside she is feeling so weak and on the verge of breaking down. However, she also says that if someone sees her go through hardship and pain and ends up crying, she will consider it a reward.
But what's most amazing about Minori is her willpower; her willpower to stand each time she falls, her willpower to give up what could have been hers for a friendship that she treasures with all her heart, her willpower to be strong for her friends, and her willpower to achieve her own happiness with her own hands. As what Minori said, her willpower is what keeps her going, that it's what helps her in achieving the things she knows will ultimately bring her happiness.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Minori is very athletic (initially being the captain of the girl's softball club at school, and in the later part of the series, the captain of the merged boys and girls softball team) so she has very good reflexes and she is also quite strong for her size.
+ She's also capable of multi-tasking, as seen as how she took on a number of different jobs, sometimes at the same time, throughout the series.
+ Good with her hands (meaning she's very good at handiwork and getting herself down and dirty.)
+ Doesn't judge anyone based on appearance, and is also a good judge of character.
+ Always tries to stay optimistic and energetic.
- She can be a bit presumptuous and thinks she knows everything there is to know about her friends and what's best for them.
- She keeps all her worries and problems to herself which makes her explode when it's too much for her.
- Her high levels of energy can be a bit... worrisome and overwhelming to some people.
- She can be a bit wild, reckless, and a bit of a daredevil.
- For someone who is very athletic, she has a tendency to trip and get nosebleeds.

[The feed is shaky at first, and only a huge spot of blue is seen. A female voice can then be heard saying, "Yosh!! That's not too tight, is it?" The screen then focuses on a Phanpy that's very loosely tied with a rope...
and all of a sudden, a girl with a determined, sparkly look on her face appears on the screen. She clears her throat and... ]
ATTENTION ALIENS!!!
I have your Phanpy here with me!! I now demand information on how I was abducted into this world and why I see Pokemon around me! [There couldn't possibly be Pokemon in the alien world, right?! That was a totally different world! She should know, she played Pokemon all the time when she was younger. Or maybe there are and she's been fooled all this time!!]
Until then I am keeping it... [from behind her, the Phanpy can be seen wiggling and stepping out of the ropes, suddenly nudging Minori playfully with it's spout. She jumps a little, being extremely ticklish before turning around for awhile, scolding it playfully, "Iyaa, don't do that yet or else our plan's going to fail!" She turns back to the screen] ... hostage until further notice! Don't worry, I will not hurt it. I look forward to diplomatic relations with your kind!!
Third Person Sample:
Minori often had crazy dreams. Once, she dreamt that she was aboard a pirate ship in space as its captain, with hundreds of small, adorable purple aliens under her command. Another time, she dreamt that she was teleported into a fairyland through a music box, and in that world every wish of hers was fulfilled. But this... well, this felt real. Almost as real as yesterday. As real as the stabs of loneliness and abandonment she felt when her best friend and the guy she liked ran away together (and she hated herself, hated herself because she promised that she would be happy for Taiga and Ryuuji, but at the same time she couldn't stop the feelings of her heart clenching). And it's almost funny, how she spent the whole of last night crying her heart out, and when she woke up, suddenly she was at a different place, at what seemed almost like a different world, with a mother who was actually there to make lunch for her. She knew this wasn't just an elaborate dream, she knew because she tried different ways to wake herself up, none of which worked. And she felt terrible, because now, not only was she far from Taiga and Takasu-kun, but she was also far away from Ami-chan, Kitamura-kun... her younger brother who must be worried sick about her right now.
All of a sudden, she felt the Phanpy gently nudging her leg with it's spout, pulling her away from her thoughts. Minori smiled, kneeling down on the ground beside the Pokemon that had been with her since she had started on this strange journey. She patted it's head, smiling widely in amusement and delight when the Phanpy gave out a sound that seemed like happy laughter. "Uwaaa, you're the cutest thing ever!" She chuckled a bit, remembering how big a fan she was of Pokemon when she was younger, to the point that she actually scoured her backyard in search of a hidden Bulbasaur or Jigglypuff that she could keep and train. When she was younger, one of her dreams was to become the best Pokemon trainer around... until she grew up and her only dream and passion turned into softball. But now that dream presented itself to her again, and this time, it was as real as ever. She didn't know what to make of it just yet. "I still have to figure out a name for you, right?" She tilted her head, deep in thought. "E-to... what about Haku? Kohaku?" The Phanpy looked delighted, smiling widely up at Minori. "You like that, don't you? Haku it is then!!"
And then suddenly, she decided. As long as she was here, she was going to try and make the best of everything. As long as she was here, she would become the Pokemon trainer she always wanted to be when she was younger, impossible (and even silly) as it seemed. She was going to be happy for Taiga and Ryuuji, and when she came back into her own world, she would have lots of stories to tell both Amin, Kitamura-kun, and her little brother. Getting up, like a main character in one of the shonen anime she so faithfully watched, she pumped a fist in the air. "Yosh! Onto Route 29!"
