Hello Professor,

I was going over my third practice test and I have a question on problem #13. The question was asking for the major product of the reaction of 2-chloro-3-methyl-3-phenyl-butane with CH3OH. The correct answer was D) 2-methyl-3-phenyl-2-butene, and I originally chose C)3.3-dimethyl-3-phenyl-2-butene. I wanted to ask if there was a 1,2 methyl-shift occuring in the reaction, which was how we got the correct answer? Thank you very much.

the reply i got:

Yes there was a methyl shift in order to make not just a tertiary carbocation but a benzylic carbocation, which is followed by elimintation. so this is E1 reaction.

Also please read name of your choice (c) very carefully, what is 3,3-dimethyl-3-phenyl-2-butene?

can such a thing even exist ????? !!!! ?????
