Good job I'm not the sort of g33k who can't wait to get their hands on the next new console. I imagine that I'll wait several months before getting tempted by pretty games into even thinking about buying this.
One advantage (to Sony) of not considering backwards compatability means that people will hang onto their PS2s. This means that Sony will not have to worry about recycling them.
One advantage (to consumerism and the environment) is the fact that people will hang onto their consoles. Thus making them think a bit longer about buying the next big thing. Resulting in less consoles that are thrown away / need to be recycled / end up in landfill anyway because there's no easy collection for WEEE in the UK yet (well not that doesn't involve the consumer actually doing some of the work themselves).
